I know little about college hockey, but I'll play along.
How is it that Air Force is in Atlantic Hockey and Alaska is in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association? Both would seem to belong in the Western Hockey Association. xconfusedx

My favorite was the old NFC "West": San Francisco, St. Louis, Atlanta, Carolina, and New Orleans.

I never understood why bsaeball had Atlanta in the west when they could have easily switched St Louis from the east to the west... but ya, that NFC West is funny.... even today Dallas remains in the east... I know its because of the heated rivalries but still

I believe St. Louis was kept in the East for the same reason, they didn't want to split up the Cardinals and Cubs.

ya but its easier to keep the rivalry in baseball where they would still play a ton in diff divisions... moving dallas in the NFL would mean a second game against the rivals only every 4th season as opposed to every season.

Alaska (nee Alaska-Fairbanks or UAF) is in the CCHA because it would be cost-prohibitive to have teams in the conference make 2 or more trips to the state, given that Alaska-Anchorage is already in the WCHA. The two western conferences (in college hockey, anything west of the Appalachians is "West") agreed to split the Alaska schools when they joined up
As for Air Force: Atlantic Hockey is one of the 2 "mid-major" conferences in hockey, along with the CHA. The difference is that the CHA allows teams to have the full complement of scholarships, while Atlantic Hockey has restrictions. In addition to wanting to compete in a conference that wasn't as competitive (Air Force was a former member of the CHA) because of those restrictions, Air Force also wanted to be a conference mate of Army. This is their 3rd year in Atlantic Hockey, which was formed several years before, when it was truly only "Atlantic" teams

xeekx I'd thought about trying for tickets if my team gets that far. Guess I'll save my DC trip for September and catch a Nationals game instead.
