Midwest vs. West

I'm glad the NCAA had the guts to leave out Minnesota. I would guess they were rooting big time for the Gophers to win a game or two at the WCHA Final Five so they could put them in the West region in their home arena and sell about 3 times more tickets than they will now.

I have tickets for both days of the East Regional in Connecticut.

For the overall top seed Boston University is sure in a tough bracket. I thought for sure they'd draw Bemidji State or even Air Force in the first round.

Go ECAC!

Minnesota was actually in a 3-way tie in the PWR with Ohio State and Wisconsin. tOSU won the tiebreaker, which was RPI. Had the Gophers beaten UMD on Thursday night, they would likely be in

Unfortunately for BU, the CCHA's 4 bids were 2 #1's and 2 #4's. Interestingly enough, Air Force was actually ranked #14 in the PWR, ahead of Ohio State, so BU's matchup doesn't look so bad there xreadx

I talked to some of the NoDak basketball coaches in the hotel lounge when we were out at UNI during the playoffs about that type of weekend -- Hockey Friday night, Football at Noon on Saturday, Basketball at 4:00 on Saturday, Hockey on Saturday at 7:00. Doing football and hockey is much easier (a lot more weekends available), but the idea came up when we were talking about NoDak's basketball travels due to the Great West scheduling.

Whether it is with North Dakota, Maine, Vermont, Northeastern, Western Michigan, Miami of Ohio, Bowling Green, Colgate or the hockey Ivies, there is the opportunity to have some great sports weekends with multiple games in the Fall.

UM-Duluth's first round game against Princeton should be a game of goaltending. Princeton has an excellent goaltender in Zane Kalemba, the ECAC Player of the Year and a Hobey Baker Finalist. I think it's pretty safe to say that there won't be many goals scored in Minneapolis that night!

I had Denver and Michigan both going out in the second round anyway, so today's results wouldn't have hurt my bracket too much. The LAX game between UVA and Maryland went to seven OT's and ESPN didn't start the hockey game at 2:00 on ESPN Classic or ESPN News or put the LAX game only on ESPNU where it was also being telecast. The LAX didn't end until the hockey game was into the second period. To make matters worse they didn't get ESPN360 working until the 2nd period yet kept a scroll bar on ESPN2 saying that you could watch the hockey game on 360. From what was posted, the phone calls into ESPN overloaded their system.

Bozos should have known that a NCAA Tournament Game is much more important than a regular season game.

What a goal! What a finish! WHAT A GAME! New Hampshire tops North Dakota 6-5 in OT! Best game of the tournament, by far. Great action, great goals all day long xbowx xbowx xbowx xbowx xbowx xbowx

I didn't see Minn-Duluth score the two goals in the last 40 seconds to tie (tying goal at 0.8 seconds left) last night so I'll leave that evaluation to you TVR! Just as well because I'd just be called a homer!!!!! :D

I'm still stunned, UNH scored with 0.1 second left to tie then got the game winner 45 seconds into OT. Just a great final play, beautiful pass and subsequent shot. xbowx xbowx xbowx xbowx

Last night was pretty good, but there were lulls in the action at times

Incredible finish in the Air Force-Vermont game. Late in the OT, the officials reviewed a possible goal from 6 minutes earlier. After review, they made the call, and it was right. Vermont goal, Vermont win!

The Catamounts are going to the Frozen Four! It's only their 2nd trip to the Frozen Four in school history, the other coming in 1996, with a team lead by NHL star Martin St. Louis

Tough loss for the Falcons, but a great season and great effort

Oh what a day it has been

Quick recap:
-Vermont and Miami advance to the Frozen Four, their 2nd and 1st trips, respectively. No national titles for either so far

-UMD losing means all WCHA teams are eliminated, which makes this the first Frozen Four since 1999 where a WCHA team did not make it

-Miami is the second #4 seed in NCAA history to make the Frozen Four. The first was Notre Dame...who did it last year

-Notre Dame was the 3rd #1 seed to lose in the opening round this year, which to my knowledge is the first time that has ever happened

-Lower seeded teams are 7-3 so far this tournament

-4 of today's 6 games were decided by 1 goal. Of those, 1 was tied in the last second, 1 was won in the last minute, and 2 were decided in OT

-The team scoring first is 8-2 (Northeastern and Air Force are the 2)

What a tournament xbowx xbowx xbowx xbowx xbowx xbowx xbowx xbowx xbowx xbowx

Conference records:
CHA: 1-0
HEA: 4-1
AHA: 1-1
CCHA: 2-3
ECAC: 1-2
WCHA: 1-3

Tomorrow's games
Boston University vs. New Hampshire (Manchester) 5:30
Cornell vs. Bemidji State (Grand Rapids) 8:00
Both times Eastern

More interesting facts worth mentioning:

-Of the 6 teams still alive, only 2 have won Division I National Championships, Cornell with 2 and BU with 4 (Bemidji has multiple titles, but at the D-II and D-III levels)

-BU or UNH will join Vermont to make it 2 Hockey East schools in the Frozen Four, the 4th time in the last 8 years the conference has gotten half the Frozen Four

-If Cornell wins, they would be the first ECAC team in the Frozen Four since 2003, when it was....Cornell

-If Bemidji State wins, in addition to being the first Frozen Four in school history, it'd be the first for a member of the CHA, which is especially interesting given the CHA will almost certainly cease to exist in the next 2-3 years

Ok So what the heck is Bemidji State and has it always been a good hockey school. Never heard of it before.

Also, have there ever been this many upsets to the top seeds in an NCAA tournament in any sport. BU has to be loving life that it won't have to face any 1 or 2 seeds for the whole tournament (if it keeps going). Good luck to UNH and Cornell today.

Burrrmidji St Beavers have had a good hockey program at the level they played. It's location is close to Grand Forks and UND, nice campus on a lakeshore. Next year they are in the WCHA I believe. That makes 5 Minnesota Schools in one conference.

I hope you're including the AE basketball semi-final game in "the UNH playoff games" because that one did more harm to my ticker than the football game at UNI. xeekx We didn't have the lead against UNI like we did against Binghamton in hoop. While there have been an incredible amount of great wins these past few years, the four crushing playoff losses in FCS along with that basketball loss this year really hit this old fart hard. But don't worry, I'll be right there ready to go for another season in September.

What a tournament

-BU advances to their 21st Frozen Four, looking for their 5th National Title

-The other 3 schools in the Frozen Four (Bemidji State, Miami, Vermont) have 1 combined Frozen Four appearance and no D-I National Titles

-Bemidji State and Miami are the 2nd and 3rd #4-seeds to make the Frozen Four. And, clearly, this is the first time first time ever 2 #4-seeds have made it

-On a more disappointing note (for me, at least), this is now the 6th consecutive Frozen Four to occur without participation from a member of the ECAC :(

Bemidji State has won a few National Championships at the D-II and D-III level.

Bemidji State won five D-II titles (1984, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997), plus three more times as D-II runner-up (1983, 1996, 1998).

Won one D-III title (1986), one D-III runner-up (1985)

Won seven NAIA titles (1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1973, 1979, 1980), three-time NAIA runner-up (1974, 1978, 1982).

The Rat Dogs really have the puck luck going their way! Didn't their fourth goal get knocked in by a UVM player? At a minimum the UVM stick stopped the puck from going into the corner and redirected it back into the crease. And they scored their game winner over UNH in the regional final off a Wildcat with 14 seconds left in the game.

Agreed TVR, there were some incredible games in this year's tournament!! I love football and basketball, but there is something special about playoff hockey. They say great teams come through the most when the chips are really down and that is certainly what BU did. I have to say it was one of the best college hockey games I've ever seen in my life. I picked a good day to go out and buy a Sony 40" plasma TV. Hockey comes in great on those things. That game was the first sports event I ever saw on it and it is not one I'll soon forget.

Miami (OH) has every reason to be proud. They took the best team in the nation with a legendary coach, right down to the wire. I agee with my friend UNH_Alumn, this game (and tourney) SHOULD have recruited some new college hockey fans. It was a classic.
