There's no need to hijack the MAAC thread with this.

The answer is Indiana State...#1 seed in 1979.

Technically, they may not have been in I-AA at that time. If not, they sure seemed like they were. xrotatehx

UMass had a #1 seed in men's basketball in 1996 and won the FCS Championship 2 years later.

How about Georgetown and St. John's in the mid 80's? I'm not sure what they were playing, but it wasn't I-A.

Actually we should be talking about the "highest" seed not lowest. I.E. the number one seed is the highest seed. Also it's the highest seeded teams that play 1-AA/FCS football. xnodx

Obnoxious self-serving hijack: How many FCS schools other than UMass have made it to the Final Four in at least five of the eight NCAA Division I men's team sports? (Reminder: FCS has only existed since 1978.)

Our list:
UMass Basketball: 1996
UMass Football: 1978, 1998, 2006
UMass Lacrosse: 2006
UMass Soccer: 2007
UMass Water Polo: seven total, most recently in 2001 (team disbanded in 2002)
UMass Baseball: none during FCS era (last world series appearance was 1969)
UMass Hockey: no Final Fours, but made it to Elite Eight in 2007
UMass Volleyball: not sure if we've ever had a men's volleyball team, but if we did it was probably awesome.

"One sport" schools suck. Play to win or don't play at all.

Most of those sports arent relevant outside the northeast but we have made a Sweet Sixteen in hoops and a College World Series in baseball and if you want to count Women's we got a Final Four in hoops there twice.

definately want to reiterate this thread should be about HIGHEST SEEDS... lowest seed would be 16 and plenty of fcs schools have been there

Georgetown and St. John's were Division III in football until the NCAA rule against "playing down" was instated.

1-AA or FCS as we know it started in 1982. Before that it was just a few teams.

What a fantastic sport. Pity it suffered so much due to mainstream sport expansion and Title IX. It's one of the hardest physical sports to play and is incredible to watch.

U Mass has had one storied and amazing program. Fantastic results.
