OK, we've had plenty of talk of new A10, Patriot, CAA, NEC, Big South, SoCon, AmEast, etc... all are talk and speculation. Let's take it one step further. Lets see your ultimate conferences for I-AA football.

Here are the rules:

1. This is purely for entertainment purposes so reality is thrown out. No criticizing others because schools don't fit academically (unless that's what they were going for) xnonox

2. YOU decide how big each conference is. :)

3. You must use ALL the I-AA teams. xnodx

4. You must give each conference a name. xlolx

5. Have fun with it. xthumbsupx

I think these are all the teams.

Would drop either Wofford or WCU to get Valdosta State. With Furman in the Greenville/Spartanburg media market neither Wofford or WCU has much to offer as far as media coverage.

I don't know......with 12 teams it seems you would have an unfair advantage come playoff selection time.:D

I have to beleive there is room in the Northeast for a true Mid Major all sports conference while still having FCS football at the full scholarship level. Other than the Big East and to a lesser extent the ACC there is just a group of minor D-1 conferences in the Northeast. While it is true Binghamton beat Rutgers in basketball and I belive Harvard knocked off Boston College
in basketball this season I dont see anyone else in the AE, NEC, Ivy, CAA or A-10 being a threat to UConn, Syracuse or a Pitt in many other sports.
With its footprint in New England and New York a new conference has great marketing potential and could have the ability to place teams in NCAA Tournaments and the NIT. Villanova is probably an excellent example of a school ranked nationally in FCS Football and also a power in other sports. Will college presidents and AD's from all the conferences we represent now support such a move? How much more funding would required ? I think fan support would be there.
So you have 1 or 2 FBS football games a season and hopefully marquee games at home in basketball and other sports on a regular basis. Just fanatasy for now.

I'd like to see the SoCon as such:

SoCon West
Samford
UTC
Georgia State
Jacksonville State
App State
Western Carolina

SoCon East
The Citadel
Furman
Wofford
Georgia Southern
Elon
VMI

I'd like to see VMI back in the SoCon. I also wonder how long Ga State will want to play football in the CAA. I imagine the furthest SoCon school from Ga State is still closer than than closest CAA school.

Richmond and William and Mary have to stay in the same conference not matter the alignment. One of the oldest rivalries in the South. As one goes so does the other. Anything that breaks them up is unacceptable.

McTailGator

OK, we've had plenty of talk of new A10, Patriot, CAA, NEC, Big South, SoCon, AmEast, etc... all are talk and speculation. Let's take it one step further. Lets see your ultimate conferences for I-AA football.

Here are the rules:

1. This is purely for entertainment purposes so reality is thrown out. No criticizing others because schools don't fit academically (unless that's what they were going for) xnonox

2. YOU decide how big each conference is. :)

3. You must use ALL the I-AA teams. xnodx

4. You must give each conference a name. xlolx

5. Have fun with it. xthumbsupx

It would be a lot more fun and real if we could leave the NON-Scholarship schools, and schools that don not want to participate in a playoff system out of it.

What I would REALLY like to see is eight 12 to 16 team conferences split up into 2 seperate divisions with a Conference Championship Game which will act as "The First Round" of the top 16 teams.

The 8 Conference Champs then proceed to the quarter finals, semi's and utimately, the finals.

I was trying to go realistic as I could with these. The new Summit/Great West needs Cal Poly/UC Davis in it until the moves could happen. I dont see the Big Sky expanding with them.

Huh? Georgetown and EKU? Could you find six schools with less in common?

Since we're playing along, here's my pick, taking associate members of the PL, CAA, and NEC together:

The Eastern Eight
Duquesne
Fordham
Georgetown
Holy Cross
Massachusetts
Richmond
Rhode Island
Villanova

Lol, I know man. I wasn't going for any kind of conference ideals or standards. Just regional stuff that would give somewhat balanced fun matchups.

I'd like to see the SoCon as such:

SoCon West
Samford
UTC
Georgia State
Jacksonville State
App State
Western Carolina

SoCon East
The Citadel
Furman
Wofford
Georgia Southern
Elon
VMI

I'd like to see VMI back in the SoCon. I also wonder how long Ga State will want to play football in the CAA. I imagine the furthest SoCon school from Ga State is still closer than than closest CAA school.

Does Iamarino still want a 14-team SoCon? I know he was quoted a couple of years ago, before Samford was admitted, that 12 teams was ideal but that 14 teams could also work.

My proposed Southland Conference - threw in Delta State, because I needed an "East" team, so we would not have to split up the Texas teams. Put A&M-CC over UT-Arlington, because football in Corpus would be a good thing for South Texas and they would not get lost in between UNT, SMU, TCU and the other Texas schools in the DFW area (and beyond).

Southland West
Lamar
Sam Houston State
Stephen F. Austin
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
Texas State - San Marcos
UT-San Antonio

Northwestern State

Frankly, I'm amazed that at least half a dozen JMU posters haven't already reminded you how UNH lost to JMU the last two times we played. Between the off-season (not many posts these days) and the Big Dance, I suspect they just haven't read your post yet. Just trying to nip a pissing match in the bud. And I'm trying to keep this thread from being moved to the smack forum which would happen if a pissing match ensued. That's been my experience on this forum, seen many a comment springboard a thread into total smack. Conference alignment is a topic near and dear to my heart and I want the thread to still be here. I haven't finished my alignments yet. ;) :p

Is UNH capable of beating all the teams listed, yes. Would I ever make such a bold statement that we'd beat them all, never. Be realistic, in the past few years, how many teams have beat JMU and App State in the same year? Temple and Marshall aren't the best FBS teams in the land, but they are still FBS teams who would be very challenging opponents. Winning all four of those games in the same season would be an incredible feather in anyone's (FCS) cap. And even if we somehow got JMU and ASU in Durham, I'd still bet against us winning all four games. And even then we'd still have to win a game in Newark or Statesboro, hardly a slam dunk. How many FCS teams do you think could withstand a gauntlet like that?

You can't be serious wanting to include UNH in an "FBS ready" conference. I love my alma mater probably more than most, but I acknowledge that we compete at a higher level than can be expected with our facilities, resources, academic standards, inability to rely on in-state talent, student and alumni support, etc. I've been to UNH games at UMass, Delaware, Towson, Hampton, Hofstra, Villanova, Georgia Southern, Southern Illinois and Northern Iowa. I've seen the stadiums at William & Mary, James Madison, Lehigh, the Citadel and everybody has seen playoff games on TV from App State. UNH is so far behind these schools it isn't funny. I'm going to be happy if UNH stays on a course to compete with UMass, Towson, Delaware, Albany, Stony Brook, etc. Unless you have a magic formula to open up the NH Legislature's and the Alumni purse strings, there is no way in halibut that UNH can compete in an arm's war with JMU, ODU, GA State, GA Southern, Charlotte, Marshall, etc. Those schools are larger and growing more (or already FBS) than UNH, have more resources and more local talent to recruit, etc. It's not slamming UNH, it's just being very objective and realistic.

WildCat In The Hat
March 21st, 2009, 01:44 PM
You're reading way too much into this. Just saying UNH is on a talent level with the teams noted. Not saying if we had to play all of those teams in the same season, we would go undefeated. And definitely not suggesting UNH go FBS. Just giving props to my team-that's all.

When thinking about the SoCon, I get three distinct things in my head. I love talking about things like this that will never happen.

The ultimate private Southern Conference (Patriot League South):
Liberty
William & Mary
Richmond
Hampton
Elon
Furman
Wofford
Samford
VMI
The Citadel

Note: Davidson's not here, no schoalrship league should take a school that funds only one program (basketball) and leaves everything else to rot.

=========================================

The SoCon of Today, but better and without basketball affiliates:
East:
App St
Western Carolina
Furman
Elon
Wofford
The Citadel

West:
Georgia Southern
Jacksonville State
Samford
UTC
Georgia State
SC State

=========================================

The scenario I'd like to see if App, JMU, GSU, GA St, Jax St all move to FBS:
East
Elon
The Citadel
VMI
Liberty
Coastal Carolina
SC State

West
Furman
Wofford
UTC
Tenn Tech
Western Carolina
Samford

=========================================

Note, most people split conferences on North/South lines. I think with a SoCon, it has to be on an east/west line given the mountains. Schools at or in the mountains can go west much easier than schools on the coast or in the piedmont of states like NC/SC/GA/VA where mountain passes west are really limited.

First of all, YSU in the Summit? What's the matter, don't like any competition? Don't worry, not too many people in Ohio that are excited about playing teams from the Dakotas either. Not too mention that stupid new name. Youngstown just left that conference a few years of, back when it was the Mid-Con. Also, gee I believe it is the OHIO Valley Conference & all though the city is on the PA border, Y-town is in Ohio. Especially when you consider YSU was in the OVC until 1989. Furthermore, take a look at a map, Youngstown is closer to schools from the CAA ...than OVC or MVFC.

As a fan ...I would rather be an indy, until YSU has the funds for move up. However, that would eliminate the post-season because it would be too difficult to schedule as an indy.
