Video is coming in beautiful! Temp is 41 and partly cloudy. Decent crowd on home side. The visiting side doesn't look so hot...

Bad turnover for Furman. Martin and Felton have a bad exchange on FU's 1st offensive play, and Nicholls returns it to near the 25.

3-0 Nicholls. NSU has run six offensive plays for 13 yards, but the Furman turnover gives them the early lead.

Two turnovers in four plays for Furman. This could be a LONG day if we can't hold onto the ball any better than this.

Furman radio claims Stepp was interfered with on the INT.

Well, Furman D looks mighty fine...

Nicholls is gonna make them tired after a bit here if the offense keeps turning it over or going three and out. Nicholls does well when they have nice TOP...

That's why I keep saying it... it's the players, not the system. Nobody has once questioned the athletic talent Furman has at quarterback and running backs. Their wideouts block well, and there you have it.

Unimpressive? Nicholls St. has dominated the time of possession in the first half. That means their attack is working, if only they could punch it in.

What burns me up is that Cox Sports out of New Orleans is picking up the feed of the Grand Valley State/Saginaw Valley State DII playoff game instead of Nicholls State at Furman. That makes no sense to me at all. You'd think they'd pick up the feed for a game involving a team from a town that's about 60 miles from New Orleans. I know a Thibodaux cable station is picking it up (of course I can't get it).

So I'm stuck with watching this Colgate/New Hampshire total mismatch instead of watching a competetive game involving a Southland team from a school located about an hour from my house.

JohnStOnge

From listening to it on the radio on and off it sounds to me like Nicholls State had opportunities to take a fairly big lead but didn't get it done. That does not bode well. I think Nicholls really dominated the first quarter and a half to an extent much greater than reflected by a 6-0 score. Most of the time when you do that it comes back to bite you. Gotta make hay while the sun shines.

Nicholls runs that play all the time. It's a hard count designed to draw the defense offsides. Center snaps the ball, line doesn't move and they run a fly down the field with the split end. They hit that play on us for about a 30 yard gain, though we did have it covered, just made a great play.

I think a lot of our problems on offense were due to Nicholls' large secondary. They did have some responsibility in our misfortunes.

It was a much shorter game as well because of the long drives by both teams. Far fewer possessions than normal.

The real story today was Furman's defense. We held the #2 rushing team in the country to just 199 yards, three weeks after giving up 430 yards to Georgia Southern.

Wow, AP story is already up. Here you go:

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- Ingle Martin overcame a sluggish passing game and Brandon Mays had 61 yards rushing to lead Furman to a 14-12 victory over Nicholls State in the first round of the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs Saturday.

The Paladins (10-2) defense stopped the Colonels (6-4) on fourth down on their own 39 with about five minutes remaining, and then drove deep into Nicholls State territory as the clock ran out.

The Paladins will face the winner of Hampton-Richmond, which play Saturday night.

Furman, which has been to the playoffs six of the past seven seasons, was sluggish from the start. But the Paladins scored on their opening possession of the third quarter to go ahead 14-6. Using a combination of five rushers led by Mays' 18 yards, Martin scored from the 1 with 8:06 remaining. Martin finished 5-of-12 for 68 yards and one interception.

The Colonels fought right back, scoring on a 15-play, 80-yard drive helped by a key pass interference call on third down, and an offsides penalty that was declined. Yale Vannoy's 22-yard scoring strike to Kenley Horton cut the lead to 14-12. Horton was open after most of the Furman defenders stood still expecting the referee's whistle.

Joseph Tobias had 90 yards rushing on 20 carries to lead the Colonels.

Furman went ahead 7-6 at halftime despite two turnovers and being outplayed for most of the half. Martin led an 80-yard drive in the final minutes of the second quarter, hitting a wide open Justin Stepp for a 29-yard scoring toss with 1:23 to go.

I think a lot of our problems on offense were due to Nicholls' large secondary. They did have some responsibility in our misfortunes.

I think Furman had difficulty with the physical, man-to-man defense by the NSU cornerbacks. We generally see zone defenses in the SoCon. But once Furman got its blocking schemes adjusted, the power running games was there. Given how well the defense was playing, there wasn't a need to pass very much. Only one Furman punt in the game, IIRC.

Great win by the PALADINS. Far and away NSU was the biggest team we have faced since WKU. Lots of good news here for the Dins. Wallace Artis has become a man on defense. And when it counted our offense beat their defense man-to-man to run out the clock. NSUs DBs and LBs had blankets on the Furman receivers most of the game.

I would love to see NSU play GSU. GSU has way more speed on offense but NSUs backs are a load. That would be a fun game to watch. The surprising thing about this matchup was the success Furman had on the corner.

Maybe now some people will respect this young D a little more.

As a Furman fan would you rather want to play at Richmond or at Hampton next week?

ashram
November 26th, 2005, 07:23 PM
I'd rather play Hampton, but in Greenville. So I guess I'd rather play Richmond. FU's defense impressed me today like they haven't all season. We stopped the #2 rushing team in the country on 1st and goal at the 6. We've had a lot of criticism of our D this year, and deservedly, but today we played like Furman is supposed to play.

I really don't think the score reflects the way the game was played. We moved the ball at will, for the most part, and just had some turnovers on questionable calls that skew the score. Apparently they were A10 refs. I'd like for them all to watch the Felton TD that they spotted at the 1 when his entire upper body was past the goal line. That's not even to mention the 2 late hits on Ingle
