He returned $25,000 in bonus money. Why? Because the team had a poor season and, in this economic climate, he wanted that $25,000 to be put toward other university needs.
"My thinking was that our fans deserve better and I stood before them very humbly, and said 'You deserve better,'" Eustachy said after his team's 58-42 loss at Memphis Saturday. "What a better way to give back when the school has been so good to me in difficult times."

He may have helped but I think Calhoun did a pretty good job himself...

That dude is trying to save his job.
They fired Greene down at USM, gave this guy the world, and he has not produced record's better than Greene.
USM can't even draw 500 people to their games, Memphis is running through CON USA like Ex-lax making everybody else in the league an after thought.
When Greene was coach, he ran with Cinci, Louisville, Memphis, and everybody else in Con USA back then.
As for Calhun looking bad, WHY WOULD THAT BE.
He told an a-hole reporter exactly what he needed to be told without the political correctness.
All the money UCONN basketball bring in, people need to stfu about his salary.
The booster's don't have a problem paying most of it so why should this guy MAKE a news story instead of reporting one.
It's getting to the point where every sport reporter is trying to go the ESPN breaking story routine.
Making news instead of reporting it.

When Calhoun took over UConn, they were a joke. He is the one who made UConn what it is today in terms of basketball. The school (and the state) has gotten hundreds of millions more because of him than they would have otherwise gotten.

I didn't have a problem with what Calhoun said except for the "I want to retire someday" comment. Come on, Jimmy... tell the thousands who have been laid off in the last few months that you're gonna need your $1.6M per in order to retire someday. He earned it and that's the truth, no need to come up with lame retirement excuses.
...and I have no doubt that he'll retire when he's good and ready and have a very comfortable retirement.

at least that's better than his usual activity of Larry Eustachy making Larry Eustachy look bad. ;op
Though to be honest, I never really had a problem with his "scandalous" actions of attending a party and drinking a bit. Since he was just doing what most of us old farts around here WISH we could be doing.... (partying with the college chicks). haha.

Before Jim Calhoun, UConn athletics as a whole was a joke, not just in basketball. Once he put UConn basketball got on the map, other sports at the school began to grow like women's basketball and football - two more high profile sports that brings in millions into the University.
I'm not a fan of UConn by any means, but I have a lot of respect for Jim Calhoun and what he's done for the University of Connecticut.

seems like a cheap stunt to build goodwill and get a story about himself that isn't USM disappoints...
i agree with what has been said - calhoun can validate his salary - by the revenue he brings in and the prestige he creates.

Perhaps part of his motivation was to get some good publicity. So what? Nothing wrong with that.

I wonder if Cyclone fans wish they hadn't fired him. They might still be winning the Big 12.
Who am I kidding...
