2009 UMass Schedule Released
Minutemen to play at Kansas State; Host six games at McGuirk Stadium
The University of Massachusetts has announced its 2009 football schedule. Under the guidance of new head coach Kevin Morris, the Minutemen will host six games at the friendly confines of McGuirk Alumni Stadium. The home slate begins with a three-game home stretch in September when UMass hosts Albany on Sept. 12. UMass opens its season at FBS foe Kansas State on September 5, in the second meeting (2003) between the teams. The Minutemen will take on four teams that made the FCS NCAA playoffs last season including National Champion Richmond, on the road on Oct. 24. UMass hosts national semifinalist James Madison on Nov. 14 in the final regular-season home game. The Minutemen also play FCS playoff teams New Hampshire (at home on Oct. 17) and at Maine on Oct. 31. The four playoff teams were all ranked in the Top 20 of the final Sports network poll of 2008: No. 1 Richmond, No. 3 James Madison, No. 8 New Hampshire and No. 18 Maine.
“We are playing the typical UMass schedule that is ultra competitive,” said Morris, who was promoted to head coach on Jan. 19. “Each and every week we will be challenged by some of the top teams in the country. We open with a big game at FBS team Kansas State and then follow that with three home games at McGuirk. We are looking forward to playing in front of our home fans who have been so supportive in recent years. With the lights and the turf and a terrific fan base, we have a true homefield advantage at McGuirk.”
UMass has won 18 of its last 20 games at home including a 16-game home win streak which lasted from 2006 into 2008. UMass’ six home games are: Sept. 12 vs. Albany, Sept. 19 vs. Rhode Island, Sept. 26 vs. Stony Brook, Oct. 17 vs. New Hampshire, Nov. 7 vs. Northeastern and Nov. 14 vs. James Madison.
Following the game at Kansas State, UMass will not play a road game for more than a month as the Minutemen are at Delaware on Oct. 10. That game begins three of four on the road with the Oct. 24 game at Richmond and an Oct. 31 Halloween tilt at Maine. The regular-season finale is at Hofstra on Nov. 21. That marks the sixth year in a row the Minutemen and Pride conclude the season against each other. The open date is Oct. 3.
All game times and television broadcasts will be announced at a later date. Events such as Homecoming in Family Day will also be announced in the future.
