Just thought it would be cool to see what other sport your school is known for other than football, or if your team sucks at football then what sport makes the school proud ? Being an SIUC alum I lived through a period of horrible football & basketball, but am happy to say things have been much better the past 5 years. SIU has won 4 straight Missouri Valley Championships and 4 straight NCAA Tournament appearances with a sweet 16 berth in 2002. Our graduating seniors won over 100 games in their careers. Also our softball team is traditionally excellent, has been ranked nationally and was 1 win away from the college world series in 04.

We have National Championships in Basketball, Baseball, and Gymnastics, also. Our Men's Basketball now sucks. Today our Baseball, Softball, Cross Country and Golf are good. Our best Nationally ranked sport would be Rifle. We were NC runner up last year and I believe undefeated so far this year.

I don't think you'd call this a sport, but SIU actually was the national debate team champion I believe in 03. They beat YALE for the honors

Lehigh's wrestling team has been in the D-I top 10 consistently over the past 10 years. We are 5th in the nation in the number of national champions, with 26, behind only Oklahoma, Okie State, Iowa and Iowa State. Since the 1920's Lehigh has become and remained a national power with just a few dips along the way. Other than our stellar engineering reputation, wrestling is probably the school's second claim to fame. Football has only become a consistent winner over the past 35 years.

UMass basketball is making a comeback (blind optimism :smiley_wi ). We typically have a top 10 lacrosse team and our softball team wins the A-10 without fail, every single year. Our hockey team is respectable, but is going through some hard times this year (even though we just beat top 5 Vermont).

My school is best known for squandering one of the nation's greatest and proudest athletic programs and traditions, and naively accepting the argument that strong athletics are inconsistent with academic quality.
A famous 1954 article in a Catholic periodical questioned why the nation's most prominent Catholic universities were better known for their football programs than top scholarship. The article suggested that football and academics were inconsistent. Fordham dropped football in response (even though a few weeks earlier it had hired a young and enthusiastic alum to coach the football team, a guy by the name of Lombardi). We have accepted athletic mediocrity ever since, with instances of success consistently followed by longer periods of drought.
Notre Dame ignored the article. :bang:

Furman's soccer teams are usually pretty good. Our golf teams have put quite a few players into the PGA and LPGA tours. The baseball team won the SoCon title last year.

NDSU is new to Division I, but in DII the Wrestling team won 4 National Championships, and the Women's basketball team won 5. Wrestling Coach Bucky Maughan is in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, and Women's Basektball Coach Amy Ruley is in the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame with over 600 wins. NDSU also had a great Track and Field program in DII>

Hockey, hockey, and oh yeah hockey. 5 NCAA Tournament apperances, including last season, and a trip to the National Championship game in 1990. Beyond that, our women's lacrosse team owns 2 consecutive PL titles, women's soccer has dominated the PL throughout its history, and women's bball was NCAA Tourny bound for the first time in 2004.

You must be young.
You apparently don't know that SIU won about 4 national titles in gymnastics back in the '60s.

Yep, for UNH it's Ice Hockey. For the men, two national championship game appearances, multiple appearances in the Frozen Four. For the women, a NC the last year before official NCAA championship played. A few Eastern Championships when only eastern schools played women's ice hockey as well as multiple players on the women's Olympic teams.
UNH's only NCAA National Championship was in Women's Lacrosse in 1985 when the Wildcats beat the Twerps (Maryland).
Some UNH Athletes of Note:
Carlton Fisk, Baseball HOF -- Basketball Scholarship, but never played varsity, only freshman ball before signing baseball contract.
Jeff Bannister, US Olympic Track Decathalon #1 guy in 1976 -- Basketball player at UNH.
Rod Langway, Hockey HOF -- Football and Hockey at UNH, starting LB on D-II playoff team in the mid 70's.
Rich Gale, MLB Pitcher, World Series starter with the Royals -- Basketball scholarship player at UNH as well as baseball player.
Jason Krog, Hobey Baker Winner (Ice Hockey's Heisman)
Jerry Azumah, Peyton Award Winner
Don't mean to slight the female athletes at UNH (and I'm sure I forgot some of the guys) but I just don't know the names and credentials without doing research. And right now the ol' gobbler is calling!!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!

Of course, men's basketball. Top 20 program all-time, three Final Fours, national championsip in 1985.
Also won 6 straight National Championships in women's cross country in the '90s. Track and field and cross country teams are always strong. Women's basketball has a long tradition of success but has the misfortune of playing in the same league as UCONN. Women's crew has won some national championships, as well.

Our women's basketball program is more dominant in the Big Sky than Griz football. Almost in a league by themselves.

When I lived in Greenville, I played the Furman course many a time. A very pretty course that you could play for $10 walking after 2PM every day (late 90's). I once walked up by myself and was paired with an old man who used to be the head greenskeeper for the course. He was 92 years old and told me the history of every oak tree and hedge line on the course. Quite an enjoyable round! The old man shot his age and beat me by a stroke.

Believe it or not Montana used to be a basketball school, until the mid-80's. The BSC was a very respected conference in basketball until the mid 80's (I think Idaho State was once in the top 10). Montana took UCLA to double overtime in the tournament in 75 on their way to their national championship (and Wooden's last year). In the 80's Missoula was perhaps the most dangerous places for PAC 10 teams to play, and after playing in Missoula Detlef Shremp once remarked he wasn't concerned about playing at Oregon State (then one of the toughest places in the country, think Duke today) because he had been to Missoula.
Men's basketball is still goo, with 5 NCAA appearances since 1991 (2 in the last 4 years) and 1 NIT appearance in that span. in addition legendary coaches like Mike Montgomery, Jim Brandenburg, and Jud Heathcoat (who coached Magic Johnson to a NC at Michigan State) have all coached th Griz during their glory years, and Blaine Taylor at Old Dominion is also a distinguished UM player and coaching alum, (although he left under less than ideal circumstances).
The Lady Griz basketball is even more impressive (relatively), and the UM women's soccer team has had it's share of success, although as of late it hasn't been great.

Didn't you have a South St Paul player in the last men's final you played in?
In Minnesota we call it the South St Paul Jinx. 20+ High School State Tourney Appearances no Championships, Doug Woog, from SSP, coached Minnesota to zero championships, Phil Housley, from SSP, no Stanley Cup Championships. The recent Minnesota Gophers championship teams had no SSP men on the team. This only applies to the SSP men. Somewhere, somehow maybe a SSP boys hockey player has gone on and won a championship, but the jinx is a local legend around SSP.

Interested in how UMass would be thought of as a wrestling school. I am not aware that they still have D-I wrestling, and if so, that it has accomplished anything of note for reputation purposes? I think of UMass as B-Ball due to "Dr. J" Julius Erving having attended.

No apologies needed, but being somewhat of an avid follower of college wrestling, I couldn't believe I had missed a resurgence of a dormant program. Which leads me to question--why doesn't the A-10 have wrestling? Other than Hofstra, which is in Top 20, most don't even have the sport, yet are located in areas where scholastic wrestling is fairly strong.

NAU has excellent cross-country teams, with individual national champions, and several second and third place trophies.
NAU has also produced a number of track and field Olympians.
Women's swimming and diving does well.
We had a run of good basketball a few years ago under Ben Howland.

Western Kentucky is best known for their men's and women's basketball teams. The Lady Toppers manhandled former Sun Belt archrival Louisiana Tech 80 - 59 in Diddle Arena last week. WKU has made 3 Final Four appearance and a runner-up finishes in the late 80s and early 90s. WKU also excels in volleyball, swimming, and cross country. WKU has won Sun Belt titles in cross-country and volleyball this year.
WKU's volleyball team is 31 - 2 including a 28-game winning streak. The Toppers only losses were to Cincinnati and Illinois State and they play Louisville in the 1st round of the NCAA volleyball tournament Friday in Louisville. If they win, they will face the winner of the Kentucky/Maryland match.

Nationally ranked Lacrosse, nationally ranked club hockey team (I admit it that's lame) and a very good Women's field Hockey program. We have had some good baseball teams especially in the past. Our women's basketball team Beat Old Dominion Twice last year.
After all is said and done though we need to stick to football.
