Since RI is close enough to Boston, I'll stick to former Boston teams.

These are the ones from my lifetime.

1. Boston Breakers - USFL.
2. Boston Braves - AHL.

I know before the Patriots came into existence that Boston had a few different pro football teams. And of course there was the Boston (baseball) Braves.

Also, before my time Providence had a pro football franchise in the 1920's (I think) and an NBA team for a year or two in the 1940's.

Here's a full PA list I'll try:

Baseball:

Philadelphia Athletics (now in Oakland, via KC)
Philadelphia Athletics (defunct, American Association, 1882-1890)
Yet another Philadelphia Athletics (defunct, 1891, AA, had been the Quakers in the Players League)
Pittsburgh Alleghenies (still around, they were the AA forerunners to the current Pirates)

Football:
Frankford Yellow Jackets (defunct, 1924-31)
Pottsville Maroons (defunct, 1925-28)

Basketball:
Philadelphia Warriors (now the GS Warriors)
Pittsburgh Ironmen (defunct, 1946-47)
Pittsburgh Pipers (ABA, defunct, 1967-68)

Hockey:
Philadelphia Quakers (defunct, 1930-31)
Pittsburgh Pirates (defunct, 1925-30)
Philadelphia Blazers (WHA, defunct, 1972-73)

I think that's all...sports almanacs come in handy!

Didn't Frankford become the Eagles?

Frankford folded in 1931, and the Eagles started in 1933, I believe as a new team...

Here's what Wikipedia says:

The NFL spent two years searching for a new team to operate in what was then the nation's third largest city. Finally, on July 9, 1933, the NFL granted an expansion franchise to Bert Bell and Lud Wray, and awarded them the remains of the failed Yellow Jackets organization. Bell and Wray named their team the Philadelphia Eagles. Some people assume that a simple name change transformed the Yellow Jackets into the Eagles, but that is not the case. Bell and Wray did not buy the Yellow Jackets team, but rather the NFL rights to the Philadelphia area that formerly had belonged to the Frankford Athletic Association. That franchise (Yellow Jackets) had been revoked by the league in 1931. Bell and Wray then assembled an almost entirely new team; almost no players from the 1931 Yellow Jackets ended up with the 1933 Eagles. For records and other purposes, the NFL therefore treats the Yellow Jackets and Eagles as separate teams.

Massachusetts (only big 4 leagues):

Boston Braves (MLB) now in Atlanta (1953 move to Milwaukee)

Boston Bulldogs (NFL) defunct 1929
Boston Yanks (NFL) moved to NYC in 1948 defunct in 1951
Boston Braves / Redskins (NFL) now in Washington (1937 move)

That's it for Massachusetts, unless you count the New England Whalers, a WHA team that moved from Boston to Hartford, eventually joining the NHL and then later moving to Raleigh.

As said before Providence has had teams in both the NFL and NBA ironically both with similar names Steam Roller (NFL 1925-31) and Steamrollers (NBA 1946-49)

New Jersey Americans (ABA) moved to NY and became the NY Nets, now the NJ Nets (at least until 2010 or 2011)

Trenton Giants (AA-Eastern League) folded in the early 1950's

Newark Bears (AAA - International League - one of two top NY Yankee farm clubs until Yanks designated Kansas City Blues as their lone AAA farm club in mid 1950's). 1937 Newark Bears considered the greatest minor-league club of all time.

Jersey City Giants (AAA - International League) - NY Giant farm club, played in Roosevelt Stadium. Folded after 1960, AIR.

NJ Generals (USFL) folded after 1985

Trenton Pat Pavers (Eastern Basketball League) kind of a minor league for the NBA in the 1960's, in a league with the Allentown Jets (former NY Knicks Eddie Mast and Hawthorne Wingo played for Allentown) and other cities such as Worcester, MA, Albany, NY, etc.
