View Full Version : College Baseball Opening day

Today is the day, college baseball opening day. I've been blessed to go to two schools that have top baseball teams (JMU and UGA). Both schools are coming off really great seasons, JMU is returning 20 of it's 25 letterman from last years team that went 39-19 overall, 20-9 in the CAA, won the CAA tournament and received an auto bid to the NCAA tourney. JMU lost the heart of their batting line up, 2-4 spots either graduated or went pro so their is a huge hole that needs to be filled by the players that are returning. UGA also had a great season last year making it all the way to the College world series in which they were "upset" (I think Fresno St was just underrated) and finished 2nd overall. UGA graduated Gordon Beckham (#8 pick by the White Soxs) and their lights out closer Joshua Fields (Drafted in the first round... I think 26th by the Mariners). UGA also lost another starting pitcher in the 6th round. The team looks good though, but I think losing Beckham and Fields is a huge impact to the team as Beckham holds most of the offensive records for UGA and I think Fields now holds the Saves record for UGA. Should be some good baseball this year....

GO DUKES!!! GO DAWGS!!!

Hey, the Dawgs have a former player of mine on their roster, Justin Grimm, RHP. He was pretty bad last year as a freshman, but I think he'll come around in a couple of years. The couple of times we got to watch him on TV it was painful.

He passed up the Red Sox for UGA.

I would've loved to see some swings through the midwest, or even down south, but these boys gotta study too I guess.

Towson is in driver's seat for most of the game today in New Orleans before falling on a walk-off hit in the bottom of the 9th. Watched the first few innings at the ballpark, listened to the middle innings on the radio before coming back home to catch the last few online.

Southern on a very tough west coast road trip? I like that they are playing a USD team and not sticking southeast with some smaller schools and building up wins.

I left the game in the 5th today, Justin Grimm was pitching. 5 IP, with 6 strikeouts, no hits and 0 ER. He retired the side in order every inning, three up three down. Looking pretty good today, a lot better than he did last year.

But we are also playing Youngstown St who doesn't appear to be that good... blew them out of the water the first game and shut them out again yesterday 14-0. Doesn't look like today is going to be any different.

Jaguars split doubleheader with Prairie View

Advocate staff report
Published: Mar 1, 2009 - UPDATED: 12:05 a.m.

Playing its earliest Southwestern Athletic Conference series in years, the Southern Jaguars baseball team got off to a bit of a slow start Saturday afternoon in Prairie View, Texas.

The Jaguars dropped the first game of their SWAC doubleheader with Prairie View 5-2 before winning the second game 5-4 on a chilly late February day.

Despite splitting the two seven-inning games, Southern coach Roger Cador said he wasn’t displeased with the Saturday’s outcome.

“We feel fortunate (to get the split) because of the way we played,” Cador said. “Prairie View is a very good club. You’re going to hear a lot from them this season.”
