For the love of god...can SOMEONE please tell me the rules are in Cricket?!?! xlolx xlolx xlolx

No, but seriously...I'm heading to New Zealand in a while and besides a rugby match or two I was thinking about catching a cricket match. From what I've seen on Gol TV, the atmosphere looks like our Kentucky Derby. So a good time to do something out of the ordinary and get smashed with some Kiwi's, eh? xnodx

But I really have no idea what the hell is going on on the field. Anyone? xconfusedx

Yeah, you'd think. But try applying that logic when watching it and it's like WTF is going on here?!?! Why is the field 360 degrees? Why aren't they wearing gloves? What is up with the three pegs that the pitcher is trying to hit? xconfusedx

I guess I could just get hammered and make my own rules. xwhistlex

I think that's the best course. Seriously, you'll learn the rules, watch it once, forget the rules while you're watching and never pay attention to it again. You and your wife should make up your own rules and then place a bet between the two of you based on those rules.

RULES OF CRICKET:

- Put a little white bread in the cage with 'em, they'll live longer that way.
- Use one cricket per hook, insert the hook through the crickets anus and out at his head.
- Put a split shot sinker a few inches above the cricket.
- Place the bob or float about 3 feet above the cricket,
- Throw cricket by a submerged log, stump, lily pad, overhang, or similar vergitation/structure,
- Wait for float/bob to go under and set hook,
- Reel fish in, remove from hook, put into live well,
- Repeat as necessary until you have enough to fry for supper.

When I lived in New Zealand, the guys at my school had me play in one of their intramural games of indoor cricket. After playing the game I can safely say I STILL don't understand it.

I went on a cruise 2 years ago.

While on the cruise the Cricket World Cup was going on and almost every island we stopped at the entire island was focused on it.

In fact a couple of the islands they had brought in cruise ships to serve as extra "hotel" space for the duration.

I would guess that the matches were held on 5 or 6 different islands. The island that actually had a match going on were absolutely consumed with the match.

These things went on for almost the entire day

The pitcher tries to knock down the wickets, the batter tries to protect the wickets. The ball doesn't have to go forward. What would be foul tips in baseball are like hits. Stupid game. xcoffeex xnonono2x

All the more reason to drink alot and make fun of the Kiwi's and their silly games!!! xthumbsupx

Meh, turns out we won't get a chance to see the international squad (the equivalent of the their national rugby team, the All-Blacks). :( I don't know if we'll be able to see a domestic game.

There is a local cricket club that plays on Sundays at a park near me. It's quite a site to see, everyone all dressed up in white.

Do you ever go watch?

Is it true that games can go on all day? And sometimes several days?? xeyebrowx

Seriously....if the atmosphere is anything like going to a Kentucky Derby or NASCAR, then I'll go just for that. But if people sit in the stands and actually WATCH the game for hours and hours...I shall pass.

I watch until the light turns green and then I yell GO HOME COMMUNISTS! out the window.

I've driven by matches several time in Winnipeg at Assiniboine Park. It does look a bit formal. Never stopped to watch though.

My Aussie father in law tried to explain cricket to me once. I lost interest after the first few sentences, though, and didn't retain a word of it. xconfusedx

Yes because foul balls are hits. xoopsx

Yep, but that's more common with Test Cricket. The difference between Cricket and Test Cricket is the number of innings (Test has a lot more and they play as many matches as they can over seven days). Innings can lost a long time. And they factor in tea time as well.

Okay, here's what I got to try to get people to understand it.

Basically, the fielding team is trying to get 10 outs. The batsmen can hit the ball any which way. You get a run by safely running from one end of the center area to another (18 meters) and you just have to reach the white stripe on the ground. The ends are like bases. A hit ball that leaves the field of play before hitting the ground is 6 runs. If it hits the ground before leaving the field of play, it's 4 runs. Also, the pitcher has to bounce the ball on the ground once for it to be considered a fair pitch.

The fielding team gets out the following ways.

-If the pitcher (bowler) hits the sticks (wicket) with the ball on a pitch.
-If the ball is hit and caught in the air.
-If the batsmen had the ball hit his leg in front of the wickets.
-If the fielding team tags a wicket on that end with the ball before the batsmen can reach the stripe.

And the other ways you can get out are technicalities like if you don't come to bat in a timely fashion or if you choose to end the inning voluntarily. Scores are often in the triple digits because 10 outs is really hard to get. Scores can be like 180-156. If a score reads 76-8 to 0, that means that the first inning is still being played and the 8 means how many outs the fielding team still has to get before the inning ends.

Hope that helps. xconfusedx:Dxthumbsupx

Any chance you can catch a quick flight to Australia and watch an Australian Rules Football game? I loved it when ESPN used to broadcast those games.
