With the greatest rivalry in all of college basketball set to write another chapter in a long line of great games, what are your thoughts, predictions, all-time favorite memories of the UNC vs Duke game?

i'd say it's the most publicised rivalry.. but you can't slap a "greatest" tag on it. There are several other rivalries that are just as heated.
anyways.. UNC by 12

There are plenty of big time rivalries in major college basketball but I don't think any of them can compare game for game and team for team with Duke-UNC. That being said, I don't like either of them but I dislike Duke more so Carolina wins 83-78.
FWIW, it's the same as Yanks-Sawx in MLB. Fans from LA, Chicago, St. Louis, Philly, et al may claim it's not the preeminent rivalry in the sport but they know it is.

Ok, just to be clear. I started this thread about the UNC vs Duke rivalry. UNC. DUKE. I can't believe that I need to defend this game's place on the greatest rivalry list.
I understand the grouping of showdowns that you listed above may be important to you and I'm sure have provided a certain entertainment value over the years. But there is no game, NO GAME bigger than this one when it comes to college basketball!
Imagine someone saying that there was a bigger game in baseball than the Red Sox vs Yankees, a bigger game in college football than Michigan vs Ohio State or a bigger game in pro basketball than the Celtics vs Lakers.
I know you said that the UNC vs Duke game may not be the biggest rivalry but the most publicized. Now, I'm not in the sports media industry, but if a game/rivalry is the most publicized, doesn't that make it the greatest game/rivalry? Afterall, why would a media outlet publicize one rivalry more than another?

Hoping he^ is wrong on Carolina.
Also hoping the beat down by Clemson on Dook is repeated by Carolina Wed. Carolina will need to be agressive in the paint (including Thompson pulling his head out of his ass) and UNC will have to guard the 3 well (hope for added luck of Dook missing the majority).

Deon's been a bum for a few games now. If he can hit the short jumper, rebound well, collect a few blocks, thats about all you can ask.
It'll be interesting to see the two different styles of play go at each other and how the Duke "bigs" will be able to slow down the trio of Hansbrough, Thompson, and Davis.
Another big key to the game will be how each team shoots the 3. Duke has made a living out there all season and it will be tough for them to excel without success beyond the arc. The Heels have found the stroke as of late, much of it due to Ellington showing everyone what a great shooter he can be. If Ellington, Green, and Lawson are hitting the 3, its gonna be a long night in Durham for the dookies!

I think they prefer the University of New Jersey at Durham. Check out their roster this year - not as NJ dominated as past years, but they only have one kid who played HS ball in NC, and he's from Pennsylvania. It's a Northeastern school with a better climate. ;)

North Carolina went through the motions for much of the game but still won by double digits. It's been my belief for a few years that Coach K will never win another national title. Tonight was another reason why. He's a great coach but Duke just doesn't have the athletes that the other top 10-15 programs have. If he had UNC's team i don't think they'd lose a game. UNC on the other hand will probably fail to win the title as they seem to lose interest during large sections of the game. This years UNC team reminds me a lot of Williams '97 Kansas squad that lost to Arizona in the Sweet 16.

And speaking of getting exposed, nice to see the yearly Duke slide in full motion.

You could say "If <insert team here> would play a full game like they're capable of, nobody is going to beat them" for 4-6 different teams right now and every year. The bottom line is no one plays "like they're capable of" for all 40 minutes, especially in big games, because the competition is too good. There are a select few exceptions like Villanova against Georgetown in 1985. The team that has the will to win on any given night when the chips are down is the team that will win a tight game come tournament time and you just never know who that team might be in a one and done scenario.

Very true...and back to the UNC point, maybe they do have more offensive talent than any one. But for the last two seasons, they were knocked out of the NCAAs in a game where they didn't play defense. So they still have to prove they're going to dig in and do it against good teams. As well as they looked at times tonight, they gave up nearly 90 points to a struggling Duke team.

I agree, the "best" team doesn't always win in tournament games. But this could be the year for the Heels, they've been in some close games and they are winning games on the ROAD, where it really counts. Right now I think everybody else is playing for second.

WOW!!!

I read where UNC did it in '95 when Coach K was on medical leave and before that it was 1983. So lastnight was the first time a Coach K coached Duke team has given up 100 points in Cameron.
Had Duke continued their great shooting in the second half, the game would have been a lot closer. Its incredible that UNC stayed within 10 points at the half the way the Devils were shooting. 67% beyond the arc I beleive. But like Duke has been accustomed to for many years now, they live and die by the three and without the 3 ball falling in the second half, they couldn't score enough inside and their offensive weakness was capitalized by Carolina as they ran away with it late.
Duke's lack of athleticism also spelled their demise as they had NO answer for Ty Lawson down the stretch as he took over the game and shredded the Duke defenders left and right.
With that being said, I'm glad that game's over with and the Heels don't have to play in Cameron for the rest of the year because that is one of if not the hardest palce to play in for a visiting team. Growing up in Durham, I knew that they had no A/C in Cameron for many years and I don't think it was until 2002 that they even had a unit installed. All the area high schools held their graduation ceremonies in Cameron and it was hotter inside than it was outside, and I'm talking early June here! Whether it was intentional or not, the Cameron facilities staff definetly left the A/C off and by the end of the game, it was really taking a toll on both teams (and the floor).
The only thing better than the UNC win lastnight was the sight of the long sad faces of the Cameron crazies after they had camped out for 2 months in the cold just to get tickets.
Go Heels!
