1. Verlis Martin (5-10, 170, DB) Eisenhower High School, Houston TX
Verlis excelled as a senior where he led the state in Int's with 12. He was 1st team All-district, 1st Team All-greater Houston, 2nd Team All-State. He was a dominant figure in the secondary and as a PR/KR & even WR he never left the field and he even punted when needed. Verlis is very instinctive on the ball, and uses his positioning and ball skills to bait QB's into thinking that his opponents are open. An solid open field tackler. Verlis is an avid community volunteer where he helps tutor kids, and help with community organizations. Very bright and energetic with a mild demeanor wants to major in engineering. Verlis has both of his parents to thank for pushing and guiding him to blossom into a nice young man. Verlis also has a younger sister who will graduate early at the age of 16 who also may attend Southern University as well.
2. Marcus Thompson (6-0, 215, DE) Eisenhower High School, Houston TX
Marcus is known around the Texas high school sports world as the "little BIG man." He plays far bigger than he looks. As a 6'0 defensive end his stature is not what you think but for his junior season he contributed 28 sacks on the year and made All-Conference. His senior year he was on the same path ending the season with 14. His presence on the field is a calm storm and he leaves it out there every game. Marcus also is an honor student who excels in the classroom and he wants to major in engineering. He is attending college courses this semester to help him gain some hours before entering college. Marcus is supported by Mr. and Mrs. Thompson who has instilled in him respect, accountability and hard work. That should be one of the key components that should help him to come in and compete early.
3. Terrence J. Fletcher (5-11, 180, DB) Eisenhower High School, Houston TX
Terrence is a fast hard hitting safety who has a knack for the ball. He started out at corner and moved inside playing along one of Texas top safety Craig Lawson. Terrence is a combination of speed quickness and instincts. He loves being around the ball and making plays and having fun on the field. Terrence also plays with Verlis Martin, and Marcus Thompson. They all have been playing together since they were younger. Terrence wants to be a anesthesiologist so nursing may in the future prospects grasps. Terrence is supported by his father Terrence Fletcher Sr. and with this work ethic and skills set he also has a chance to come in a make an impact.
4. Adonis Armstrong (5-10, 175, DB) Clinton High School, Clinton MS
Adonis is a safety that has been making waves every since his sophomore year at Clinton High School. He is also a kick returner and punt returner and he is rated one of the best defensive back in the state of Mississippi. Adonis enters into our Jaguar nation as a athlete who has also shown his commitment in the classroom showcasing high GPA and Test scores. Adonis was selected to the All Metro, 1st Team Defense by Clarion Ledger, Class 5a regional best defensive back. He was awarded 6times the player of the week and 3 times awarded Defensive player of the week. Total for stats for career 171 tackles, 14 int's 3 forced fumbles, 4 block kicks, 24 Pass break-ups, and 3 TD's. Tied single season record for Clinton High school for int's (7) for the last two years. He had a total of 1000 all purpose for KO and PR this year alone. Adonis is truly a student of the game and he understands the discipline and hard work that it takes to be the best. Adonis is supported by his entire family who is no stranger to the SWAC. JSU, Alcorn , and other HBCU's are rooted deeply in their family history and we are glad he chose us.
5. Darin Self (6-1, 227, RB) St. Helena High School, Greensburg, LA
Darin is a runningback who has the size, strength and speed to be able to contribute immediately upon reaching campus. Self made first team all-District and was also a first team all-State selection. As a junior, Darin rushed for 1,708 and scored 12 touchdowns. He followed that up his senior year by outdoing those gaudy numbers, by rushing for 1,773 yards and 20 touchdowns. Self went on to play in two post-season all-Star games: the Paradise Bowl and the Red Stick Bowl.
6. Jeremiah McGinty (6-0, 200, QB) Southeast Prep, Houston, TX
McGinty is a first team all-Greater Houston selection, and first team all-District pick. Was also chosen as the Greater Houston Player of the Year and as the Greater Houston Offensive MVP at North Shore High.
7. David Daye, Jr. (5-11, 230, LB/SS) Southeast Prep, Houston, TX
David was a teammate of Verlis Martin, Dion Palmer as well as Jeremiah McGinty at Southeast Prep. Garnered first team all-District honors. A solid "student"-athlete, Daye was also a first team academic all-District pick at Alcee Hastings High School.
8. LeAndre Thompson (6-3, 195, QB) McKinley High School, Baton Rouge, LA
A tall and athletic dual-threat athlete with ties to the Southern campus. As a 10th grader, Thompson was named 1st team offense at quarterback in district 7-4A. Had passing games of 412 and 354 yards with five passing touchdowns in each of those games as a sophomore. As a senior, once again was named to the all-District first team, as an athlete.
9. Dion Palmer (6-3, 230, DE) Southeast Prep, Houston, TX
Another teammate of Martin, Daye and McGinty at Southeast Prep. Was a four-year letterman and three year varsity starter. Named second team all-district as a sophomore. Followed that up with all-district honors as a junior and senior at Lamar High School.
10. Lynnon Coleman (6-1½, 230, LB) Scotlandville High School, Baton Rouge, LA
Brother of current SU player, Andre' Coleman. Lynnon is a four year starter, and made all-District honors twice as a defensive end, twice as a linebacker and once as a tight end. A very athletic athlete, that can run and loves to hit. Played in the post season all-Star game, the Red Stick Bowl.
11. Brandon Haskin (6-3, 285, OL) Desire Street Academy, Baton Rouge, LA
Brandon was named second team all-district as a junior, and first team all-district as a senior. Named to the honorable mention all-State team. Played in the post season all-Star game, the Red Stick Bowl. Runs well and uses his hands very well.
12. Joshua Gant (6-0, 220, LB/DE) Amite High School, Amite, LA
Gant was named first team all-District, as well as being named first team all-State. Joshua was also named District Defensive MVP. Recorded 95 tackles as a senior, and played in the Northshore/Southshore all-Star game.
13. Pierre Warford (5-10, 170, DB) Amite High School, Amite, LA
Pierre is a first team all-District selection and teammate of Joshua Gant. Warford was also named to the Louisiana Sports Writers Association all-State team. Has also been selected second team all-State as a junior. Recorded 38 tackles, with seven interceptions and 18 pass break-ups as a senior. Played in the LFCA Ponchartrain all-Star game
