Well even with the loss to the cats I did get some good news this weekend!
My nephews team made it to the Div III final four soccer chaampionships!
I'm not a huge soccer fan but was very impressed with the level of play of these kids when I saw them a few years ago. Go GUSTAVUS University

World Cup soccer is the only kind I can fathom to watch. ONLY KIND.

What's a "soccer fan"?

I'm a big soccer fan. Just not of the MLS. College kicks are alright, as UVA is in the College Cup right now. I can't wait until the World Cup.

I tried to watch MLS after the previous World Cup. So far all I can see the MLS as, is a training ground for our World Cup players who have not been signed for European clubs yet.

The World Cup is going to be exciting. Our team is even better than the 2002 team.

I was brought up in a household where there were only three "real" sports - football, basketball, and baseball. My dad used to say "soccer is great because it gives the kids who can't play the other sports something to do".

I have grown to appreciate soccer, though. It is a game of great skill and endurance. I just don't know the intricacies of the game because I was not brought up on it.

With the World Cup being in Germany, games will be played at a more reasonable hour in the US. If the US gets past the first round then I expect more people will be watching soccer in the US than ever before. At least for the month of June.

Right now the US has players starting in critical positions for top clubs in the best league in the world. The US qualified for the WC with ease this time. Last time it was a real challenge, because the team always depended on Quarterbacking qualities of UVA grad Claudio Reyna. This time the team wasn't so dependent on one player, which is a big step for this team. I can't wait to see who Bruce Arena selects to go to Germany. We will have a great chance to show that 2002 wasn't a fluke and that we have arrived as a soccer power.

Nice post.

I'll predict that the US gets to the semi's in this WC. We lost in the quarters last WC to Germany, I believe? Had a nice victory over our rival Mexico also in that Cup.

Yes we knocked our archrival Mexico out in convincing fashion. We then made it to the quarterfinals and got knocked out by Germany 1-0. Germany went on to play in the finals after beating South Korea. I was at all of the US games, and the messed up thing was that we probably played some our best soccer in the Germany game. We sort of got screwed in the officiating though.

Why is that? Maybe you should start a NECKCAR or a PBR thread :D

I was watching a Div III quarterfinal just last weekend over in Spokane. A friend of mine plays for Whitworth who also won and is headed to the final four as well. Best of luck to both.
