View Full Version : Offended By Red Sox Offer, Varitek Considered Retirement

Jason Varitek appears to be willing to sitout 2009 and/or retire rather then accept Boston's $5 million offer.

It would appear he offended by the Sox offer which is a drastic cut from his 2008 salary, but Varitek has no one to blame besides himself and Scott BorASS when they decided to decline arbitration which would have netted Varitek $11 or 12 million for 2009.

Boston is expected to restart negotiations with Texas and Arizona for Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Miguel Montero respectively regardless of the final outcome of the Varitek negotiations.

Varitek has until 8:30 tomorrow morning to accept the offer from Boston.

Varitek is a touchy bastyard, he didn't sign with the Minnesota Twins over $50,000 on a $800,000 contract.

ya he didnt sign with the Twins and was drafted the next year by Seattle, again he wasnt happy with negotiations and signed with the St Paul independent team but never played for them and finally signed with Seattle.

Bye.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

I didn't hear you complaining when you been overpaid the last 4 years.

Why don't you and BorAss go find out how much in demand a 37 yr old .220
light hitting catcher with a less than average arm is worth.

If he doesnt return I would assume they go back to having no named captain for the time being... Pedroia or Youkilis would seem likely to be named captain at some point, but not yet.

Very, very bad timing to be offended by $5 Million! xsmhx xsmhx xsmhx Too bad you didn't accept arbitration. xoopsx xeekx xeekx Suck it up and take the contract, prove the Sox wrong and milk them for all those incentives. Five mill isn't exactly chump change! Especially when Joe Sixpack will be lucky to buy Nasty Gansett! xrolleyesx xrolleyesx xrolleyesx xrolleyesx xrolleyesx

He's been going down hill at the plate for a couple of years.

What has endeared him to Red Sox Nation is his toughness and the "intangables" he brings to the game. He may even get more credit for "bringing the best" out of the pitching staff then he deserves.

This could go down hill fast and could become what he is remembered for.

As a Red Sox fan I'll be sad not to have the Captain back, but he's gotta get real with what he thinks he's worth.

If I were Varitek I would take the 5 million even though he's to worth 2 million. Yes he's a leader on and off the field, but his offensive stats are a joke at best. Most teams would have cut him after the 2006 season.

If you've read the latest Jason Varitek update and are expecting an answer by 8:30 a.m., be advised: agent Scott Boras is based on the West Coast, which means an answer may not be coming until perhaps the middle of the day.
According to a source, Varitek today faces an 8:30 a.m. deadline to decide whether he will accept the team's latest (and last?) contract offer, though the team would likely allow the benefit of interpreting the deadline as 8:30 a.m. Pacific Standard Time, which translates into 11:30 a.m. on the East Coast. As of late last night, the Sox and Boras were not expected to speak again until this morning.

Though Boras is said to be an early riser, it is more than likely that he and the Sox will not have contact until after 8:30 a.m. EST, which means the matter may not play out until roughly the middle of the day.

Players shouldn't be paid or expect to be paid on past performance, it's ridiculous. The guy hasn't performed well over the last two years, why should they pay him? $5 million is a generous offer and probably even more than a player of his current caliber deserves. Players like Clemens getting paid $20 mill + to under perform is what's killing the game... these players don't play for teams anymore, they're just paid to play for them. I understand getting paid when you're performing (see Ryan Howard), but if you start dropping off in performance, why should you expect to receive another huge contract? Doesn't happen in the business world, poor performance = pink slip.

Players like Aaron Rowand who didn't want to be traded by the Chi Sox or players like Carlos Ruiz who doesn't want to play in the WBC because he wants to make sure his pitchers are ready for the season are few and far between anymore. Players who put team first.

This man is slowly, but surely killing the Red Soxs and Baseball

I saw Varitek in the 1994 college world series and thought the Twins should have paid the extra money, but I'm only and armchair GM. I also thought Todd Walker looked good in the college world series, but that was with an aluminum bat. :(

I couldn't agree more. You should get paid on performance only not what you did 7 years ago. Here's what I would do. I would give every player a base salary based on years, 1-5 year guys would get $1 Million base pay, 6-10 year guys would get $2 Million, 11-15 year guys would get $3 Million, something along those lines. And they would get "Bonus Money" for perfoming at a high level.

Just a small example

"Bonus Money"

RBIs
25-50 $50,000
51-75 $75,000
76-100 $100,000
And so-on

HRs
15-20 $75,000
21-25 $100,000
26-30 $125,000
And so-on

Wins
Roger Clemens got $20 Million dollars for winning 7 games with a 4.18 ERA. NOT on my team

10-15 $200,000
16-20 $250,000
21-25 $300,000
And so-on

If you want me to "Show you the money" Show me you deserve it.
