Glad to see that he's sticking around. Plus he'll have a familiar face on the roster with their starting center, Jamaal Jackson (another DSU alum)

Just an invite for the practice squad at best, he's got no real shot to be on the regular roster.

Don't guys on the practice squad still get ~$450K a year? That's better than I'm doing, 15 years removed from college.

No, practice squad guys get paid weekly. The last time I looked, I think the CBA sets them aroud 4 or 5K/week, but they only get paid during the year, so you're looking at 85K for the 17 week season. Still not a bad gig if you can get it.

That doesn't cover practice squad. They've got their own provision in the CBA.

I'll try to find it.

$5,200/week minimum. There could be provisions in a deal that called for a higher payment on the PS.

FWIW, it's Article 34 in the CBA.

Man, that ain't much for potentially having a 330-lb lineman roll up on your leg.

Nope, but they're also covered by the insurance provisions, so I guess they figure they're covered there.

Yea, but you guys have to read that 2-paragraph article very closely, which confirms what I thought originally. The practice guys make a $5,200/wk pay that is correct, but it isn't for 52 weeks. It's for the 17 weeks of the season and any playoff weeks if their team is in it, so it's more like an annual salary in the mid-to hi-80's for a non-playoff team guy, assuming he stays on the practice squad the whole season.

That's what I said earlier.

I think you have a point and I hope you are right.

I saw McBride about 4 or 5 times over the years. He has good physical skills. He is no Jerry Rice, (or John Taylor) but he has as much or more physical assets as many recieivers that move on to the pros.

However, The numbers game for a player like McBride is tough. There are many very athletic receivers looking for a slot. One thing that makes it hard to evaluate a player like McBride is that he played with a QB that was an average passer. If he works hard and adjusts positively to the better talent he might pull it out.

Another problem is that their time on the practice squad does not count towards the NFLPA retirement. It may be decent money for the 17+ weeks but if you don't even get credit for being on the team and retirement it is a big incentive to make a roster somewhere.
