Tony Dungy is stepping down as head coach of the Colts -- at least that's what he's telling those inside the team headquarters, sources told FOXSports.com.
While the team has scheduled a 5 p.m. press conference, Dungy is walking around the team's complex saying goodbye to players and team employees and informing them that the transition should be a smooth one for new coach Jim Caldwell.
According to one source, Dungy explained that he has talked it over with his family and they believed this was the proper time to step down, while the Colts nucleus was still intact.

Great guy. Glad he got a ring as a coach to go with his ring as a player. Hopefully he can spend some quality time with his family now.

Tony has bigger and better things ahead of him it appears. Great guy and a great coach-- hope he enjoys whatever he plans to do next.

Congratutions on a great career for one of the good guys in the NFL, he personifies the notion that class and success are not mutually exclusive... the anti-Belichick.

If I were a Pats fan, I'd be more bitter about the fact that Dungy has more class in his little finger than Bill Bellicheat has in his whole bloated body.

I suppose this means that there will be a new round of complaints about the lack of black head coaches in the NFL.

You must have Coach Dungy confused with Favre...while Dungy has contemplated retiring every year for the last five years, I don't recall him ever officially announcing his retirement.

Yes he is and I hope he has a great run. I lived in Winston Salem during his years at Wake. Those were not good years for the Demon Deacons.

I look forward to seeing more of Coach Dungy at the Plant High football games. It was funny and refreshing to see an NFL coach sitting among other parents with no fanfare.
