View Full Version : Could Meyer ever unseat Spurrier as the King of UF Football

Meyer now has one more championship as a coach at Florida than does Spurrier. Is there a number of championships that he could win, where he actually replaces Spurrier on the UF throne? Because I'm guessing that Gator fans still place Spurrier first in their hearts. Does the fact that Spurrier won a championship and Heisman Trophy as a player there, make it impossible for Meyer to become top dog?

Spurrier built that program. No matter what Meyer accomplishes he will always be second fiddle to Spurrier IMO.

Spurrier will always be revered, but that doesn't mean he will always be the king. If Meyer keeps this up, when it comes down to the greatest coaches in UF history, I think Meyers name will be the one that comes up first. I detest them both... more so Spurrier even before I came down south. I understand the dislike Spurrier has towards UGA with all that UGA has done to Florida in the past, but I still don't like him... However back to the point. Spurrier had a great career at Florida... 6 straight SEC championships, National Champion, beat UGA 10 out of 11 times. These are numbers that Meyers would have to eclipse in order to be considered the "king."

This is why. Spurrier is Florida's own, took them from their probation to a title. Meyer doesn't have the personality Spurrier has. He'll be a great coach but never the top dog.

Meyer is only 44, and he has a lot of years to continue to build a legacy in Gainesville. But when I think of Spurrier, I don't think of the Redskins or the Gamecocks, I always think of the Gators. Meyer may not be able to take the throne no matter what type of resume he builds, and I'm not a Spurrier fan.

How long before Meyers gets bored in Florida and leaves for another school? I figure when his kids are done with high school, he might consider moving on. He's got no ties to UF. I don't see him going to the NFL, but the rebuilding project at Notre Dame may appeal to him in 3-4 years when Charlie Weis finally gets shown the door.
Before you jump all over me, recall that what motivated him to take UF over ND were family issues. He spends far less time and distance traveling to recruit for UF than is required for ND. He wanted to spend time with his family, but his kids will be out of the house soon...
Now you can jump all over my ideas! :D

Meyer = 2 NC and 2 SEC Championships
Spurrier = 1 NC and 6 SEC Championships
Bear is always gonna be Alabama, Woody is Ohio State, Bo is Michigan, Bud is Oklahoma and SOS will always be Florida.

No, he couldn't replace Spurrier.
Because, imo, of what Marcus said above. Meyer will be gone in a few more years, moving to another job.
Meyer will be revered for what he has done and may do in the future for UF, but he won't be worshipped, like Spurrier.

I agree that Meyer is not there for the long haul and will likely be gone within 5 years. Hard to replace legends...Rockne is still top dog at ND and JoePA has been the only dog at Penn State....xrotatehx

I'll put it this way, I know people that pulled for him against UF when he first went to South Carolina. And I'm not talking about fly by night fans.
Spurrier is Gator football, just like Mr. Two-Bits, Danny Werfuell, and Tim Tebow.

But how does Meyer stack up against Charlie Pell and Galen Hall? Has anyone offered an answer for that?

I'd say he did that in 06.

Meyer has his heart set on Notre Dame and has in fact made those exact comments about being interested in coaching the Irish when his kids are done with school
I don't think it's about being bored at Florida, it'll just be the fact that his dream job would be sitting right in front of him, waiting to be taken

That is so true.
When Spurrier was interested in returning to Florida after his stint with the Redskins, the diehard Gators fans were ready to run the AD out of Gainesville when he told SOS he had to apply for the job.
When Zook got the job and SOS went to S Carolina, the diehard gators were actually in the stands rooting for Spurrier and the Gamecocks.

Sadly I have to think Myer is probably one of the best recruiters all time. That defense that held the 60 point bound Oklahoma to 14 points consisted of NO SENIORS AND NINE UNDERCLASSMEN. I believe all of those are his players. And let's not forget what the whole "fastest team in America" thing.
oh and there's also Tim Tebow xwhistlex

I won't say one of the best of all time but he is good. Remember two things:
1. it's not hard to recruit at Florida.
2. Zook did a hell of a job there too. (just couldn't coach emU

I know a few that were happy the Gamecocks won. They hated Zook.

5 years is the long haul for coaches anymore xtwocentsx ADs firing coaches for interviewing etc. Crazy stuff. I think I heard Meyer saying he didn't have aspirations to go pro, I think he could have by now if he wanted to. He probably makes similar money where he is now, with more stability and less crap to deal with.

Urban has called Notre Dame his dream job. After he wins 2-3 more titles at Florida in the next decade he may get bored and decide on taking on the ultimate challenge-- making Notre Dame a national champ again. Although college FB is so finicky--- Urban may have the best team in the country and not get a chance at the NC some years, but playing in the SEC is a huge advantage in getting to the NC game.

Spurrier IS Florida football... well at least he WAS until Tim Tebow.
Spurrier will always be above Meyer in the pecking order at UF, and even moreso after he leaves his ill advised sojourn at So Carolina. Spurrier didn't build the UF program as much as he changed the mindset.
At UF, prior to Spurrier the cheer was "Go gators... please." After one year of Spurrier it was "Go gators, whup their ass!" It was Spurrier who convinced the UF folks that we have the bast talent in the country, it was he and Foley who spearheaded the facility improvements, and it was he who proclaimed "I don't know why we lose to Georgia and let them own that stadium. It's called the Gator Bowl and the gators are going to own it."
BTW, Meyer would be a fool to leave UF for Notre Dame. Notre Dame is not as good a gig as UF, not anymore and it is not even close, maybe 20 years ago but not now... and the offensive system he runs makes him unattractive for the NFL. He'll be at UF for a while.

I think that shows how good he is on gameday. Look at FSU & Miami they have great recruiting classes but it doesn't carry over to Saturdays yet.

No *****. Meyer turned down Notre Dame already when he went to Florida. The point is that he called Notre Dame his dream job. After he accomplishes all their is to acconplish at Florida he may look to a new challenge, and the most challening place may be Notre Dame. Also if he wins there he may be revered forever by the Irish faithful.

Is it something that doook has spawned two of the most disliked coaches in the history of the NCAA

The more I think about it, Meyers won't touch Spurriers records at Florida, besides National Champs and he will most likely leave before he can come close.
