Oustide of Davidson right now, the conference is not very good and arguably the worst college conference in the nation. I'm very close to starting a "time to bring basketball up to the level of football" campaign. Is anyone else totally fed up with their program?

I thought College of Charleston had been doing fairly wellxconfusedx

Didn't they beat USouth Carolina or did I dream it and play Davidson very close.

Furman is at an all time low point and we have seen some low points over the last 25 years. I am beginning to believe we have won all the games we are going to win and I believe those two victories are over lower division teams:(

No chance in hell that's true. You've obviously never seen any SWAC basketball. xnonono2x

I am not a big fan of Sagarin but what else do you have when trying to compare 347 teams. FU is now at 342xeekx just ahead of Dartmouth who, by the way, beat Furman. xsmhx

Bring it up to the level of football? I have my doubts about any SoCon school having the budget to be competitive in both basketball and football. I can't think of any SoCon school that you can really consider as good in both football and basketball in the last 10 years.

I count 7 conferences plus the Indys that are lower than the SoCon. If someone can upset Davidson in the conference tourny, the SoCon may very well be a 2-bid conference. I don't really think it's all that bad xcoffeex

I am not sure how the Sagarin points work in Basketball, but there is only a 5 point difference betweent the Socon and the 12th ranked Conference. IT looks to me like the middle is pretty jammed up and that there is not much difference between that group.

We have finished either 1st or tied for 1st in the North Division 5 times in the last 10 years, but only won the tournament once (2000) in that time frame. So hard to say we weren't good, but with the exception of 2000 and 2007 (25-7) we certainly haven't been great. GSU has won or tied the South Division 4 times in the last 10 years with no tournament victory. As to the no football debate, 6 of the last 10 were won by schools who do not support football. Davidson (4), Charleston
(1), and UNCG (1). With football, ETSU (2), UTC (1), ASU (1). Without a doubt the higher profile basketball schools operate without the burden of funding footballxthumbsupx

Interesting.

I would have never gotten a chance to see the Hilltoppers as a student if the venue wasn't on campus. I guess different strokes for different folks.

The comparison may not be a good one because the quality of the teams has decreased significantly. Furman had a good (not great) program in the 50s and sixties. Frank Selvy who later played BBall for the Lakers is the only D1 college player to score 100 points in a game played at Furman in the 50s. Later in the 70s it was not unusual to see a Furman team crack the top 20. You also have to remember back in the old days only 16 ( or was it 32 I can't remember) teams made the NCAA playoffs and the SoCon was one of the auto bid conferences so that helped recruiting tremendously. The auditorium sat 5000-6000 ( and this is in the day when a 10,000 arena was huge) and was in the heart of Greeville so people working downtown and neighborhood kids came to see the game. The University is small and many of the students are not sports nuts so the 15 mile drive to see mediocre basketball does not intice the local Greenvillians with no connection to Furman to see a game:(

Losing to UNCG hurts bad. Houston is a great guy, if you ever get a chance to talk to him, do so. With that said, he has got to step up the program.

Remember, the last time we made the Big Dance, we were playing in Varsity Gym. We have a really nice facility, we have more exposure and money than ever, out bball team should be better. I was a freshman when we last made the tourney, I went to all of the home games, and some road ones through my years in Boone (and continue to go). I love ASU basketball, but I'm ready to make it back to the dance.

One thing I will say that makes me feel good when it comes to ASU basketball. We're the only team to beat Davidson since Curry came on the scene. xnodx

Just noticed today that only three teams in the SoCon even have winning records...

But how about that game last night. Most of the people there just wanted to see Curry and he was in foul trouble the entire time. Which also proved a curry-less Davidson beats ASU.

After having a great run in the SoCon Tournament last season, I was sure that we would start out the 08-09 season a little stronger than we have so far. Things aren't great right now as we sit at 4-8 with an away game against Davidson tomorrow night.

For the past few seasons, we've lacked a true inside presence and that has really been evident this season as we're gone with the 3 guard 2 forward lineup most of the way. Its hard to get excited about games that usually stay in the 60-70 point range but if we can make some noise in the SoCon Tournament again and get on ESPN for a game or two then it will all be worth it to me!
