Mountaineer's and OL FU's historical ranking of playoff success

[OL FU]

I had the idea and Mountaineer does the work so he goes first.

The tradition of ranking the best playoff teams rolls along for another edition. To date a total of 80 teams have participated in the playoffs. Fourteen have since moved on to play at the I-A level.

Points are distributed as follows:

5 - First Round
10 - Quarterfinals
15 - Semifinals
20 - Championship
25 - Win Champ

This is the all-time list. Mountaineer says that he will get around to adding the last 15, 10 and 5 year results later. Once he does I will post.

Pretty cool. I was thinking the other day where App would place among other programs all-time. I had us at a close fourth with Montana third, Youngstown second and GSU first. Pretty close. (I didn't consider Marshall because they moved on.)

Aggregate points by current conference membership.

I did not take into consideration teams that no longer play FCS nor did I consider what conferences a team played in when they were involved in the playoffs. Way to much work. I would love to see that analysis if someone has the time to do it. But here is the list by aggregate conference points based on current membership. Number of NCs listed by the team. I hope I didn't miss anyone.

I would be interested to see this list if you weighted it so a NC this year counts for more points than an NC from 20 years ago. I think that might give a better picture of the schools that maintain or are building a tradition of success.

Maybe reduce the value by 4-1/3% for every year back you go?

I may be biased but one of the reasons Furman is on the list is consistency. We have been to the playoff starting in 1982 and the last year in 2006. What would discounting our earlier victories prove. It would just give an advantage to a late bloomer.

PS If I knew all the conference histories etc. I would be tempted. But I really don't have time to research it. I also think the teams that left IAA should remain in the conference break down but I know some of them changed conferences around also so that would be more research.

Yes, but I would apply the discounts across the board. You're right that late bloomers might be unfairly represented, but that would more accurately show current status. Also, this list gives a bump to some teams higher than they are currently. I'm looking at you, Youngstown State & Florida A&M.

Furman and Delaware are neck and neck and will play for the third time in 21 year in 2009.

UD/FU are ahead of UNI by basically a national championship ( a little more I suppose) but I think this is indicative of the similarity of success of the three programs.
