Jeff Jagodzinski will be fired as the Boston College football coach this morning in a meeting with athletic director Gene DeFillippo, according to sources close to the program.

After meeting with the New York Jets in yesterday in New Jersey regarding their opening for a head coach, Jagodzinski called DeFilippo last night, setting up a face-to-face meeting this morning. They will finalize the details of his termination in the meeting. Jagodzinski has three years remaining on the contract.

A press conference is expected to be scheduled for later today.
BC officials are expected to move swiftly to replace Jagodzinski, who won 20 games in two seasons as the program's head coach. Defensive coordinator Frank Spaziani is the leading candidate to replace Jagodzinski, although athletic department officials will also conduct a search outside the program for possible candidates.

Although there is nothing in Jagodzinski's five-year contract that bars him from talking to NFL teams, DeFilippo had made it clear when he hired Jagodzinski two years ago that he wanted a coach for the long term, not someone who would use the job as a steppingstone to an NFL job.

So if he gets fired, and gets the Jets job, he gets a buy out as well as a new job instead of buying out his contract and getting a new job?

Hope he gets the job.

I would not meet with BC. I would let them fire me and sue them for wrongful discharge. Still get the Jets job and millions more.

The thing is, he's not even a leading candidate for the Jets job. He'll still make out fine, though, as BC doesn't have a leg to stand on and will end up paying him not to coach by paying the rest of his contract. BC never should've hired him in the first place.

the coach lied to the BC athletic director about what was going on. Lets not paint the coach as a saint here. Both sides have made bad decisions and obviously the best outcome for both sides is to move on. They will likely reach some agreement where the coach gets something but not the full value of any buyout that was listed in his contract.

Trying to beat Travis on a news story (especially a Boston sports news story) is like trying to beat Usain Bolt in a 100-meter race.

Anyway, if BC is smart (that's a whole other debate) I think they should see if it is legal at this time to talk to Turner Gill. I have no idea what Gill's contract at Buffalo looks like right now. But if it's legal for him to entertain offers at this time then BC should make one to him.

BC will definitely hire internally after this mess.

If the BC AD really thinks he will eventually get to hire a coach that actually will stay "long term" he is dreaming. He would have to hire someone who is 65 years old and this is his last job. Younger people will have aspirations and you can't get into a pissing contest because they do.

This is correct. However, firing Jags is not the smart way for B.C. to play this. This smacks of Gene DeFillipo being pissed on account of having his d--k stepped on.

Right now, B.C. will have to promote from within. After the way they handled this situation, not many top H.C. candidates will be interested. Luckilly for them, they have 2 former head coaches on the staff.

BC is just getting a taste of its own medicine. Jags clearly lied to the BC AD Flipper about the Jets job interview and then Jags was outed by a Jets beat writer who called Flipper to comment. It's almost exactly like when BC was initially passed over by the ACC for membership. BC pledged to stick with the Big East and then secretly worked in the shadows to leave anyways.

Now Flipper has alienated two good coaches who have left the program for greener pastures. These guys were both quality coaches who were getting paid good money. BC must be an awful place to be HC.

I wouldn't go that far. The best way to describe their progam is "It is what it is." A small (relative to most ACC members) private Jesuit school that plays football. They've got a 45,000 seat stadium that will likely never be expanded on account of their neighbors in Chestnut Hill. The program can, at best, be "good." They will contend for conference titles every few years and may, once in a blue moon, compete for #1. But they're the #5 sports interest in a pro-sports oriented town. They'll never become a perennial power like USC or Miami (who's only down right now, but will be back), Florida, Oklahoma, etc...

Boston is a pro sports town all the way. BC was # 2 in the nation at one point last season and they were still in the shadow of the Sox and the Pats.

As for their next HC, it won't be Gill since Buffalo has him pretty much sewn up. Give credit to Buffalo they know they have a good thing with Gill and they moved quickly on a contract extension.

BC's best option might be Jack Bicknell JR. He has BC in his blood. His father was a long-term HC there and he was on the team when Flutie was QB. I don't think his loyalty to the organization would be a question.

Agree with Bicknell. He was head coach at La. Tech for 9 years or so. He did allright down there, espeically when you consider Lousiana Tech's pecking order among college programs in the deep south.

Congrats to BC's AD, he will join Auburn's AD in the unemployment line in 2 years. I'm so glad Jagodzinski had the balls to go interview for the Jets job anyway. If i was a parent, I'd never send my son to BC to play football after this.

I'd go with Bicknell, first.
Second, BC lives on Catholic kids who ND doesn't want and to have a chance to show them up. That's why ND is chickening out of the BC series after next year.
