This list was very accurate on the Montana players, altho Quinn could have been a bit higher, in my view. Based only on eyeballing this and the limited knowledge I have, this looks like a very well selected team.

I received this email:
Explain to me how TSN gets THREE Hampton players on the first team...

... as did THREE App State players...

... compared to Richmond's ONE...

... and Rashad Jennings is FIRST team, and Josh Vaughn is THIRD team...

... and how a Furman and App State CB (Cortez Gilbert?) get ranked ahead of Justin Rogers (and Dino Vasso is nowhere on the list!)

They need to do something how they weight that list. There is something seriously wrong when App State, UC Davis and Hampton have more players on the first team than New Hampshire has in total - and that includes honorable mentions!

Cortez Gilbert single-handedly shut down two of the best receiver in FCS last year (Hudgins and Roberts.) Offenses just stopped throwing in his direction... numbers aren't everything.

I received this email:

So are they saying Vaughan should be 1st team just because Richmond won the national title?

Hampton has very good special teams and Chris Baker is the best DT in FCS, which is why he is declaring himself eligible for the NFL Draft.

Gilbert and Middleton are among the best CBs in FCS. Middleton is a likely draft pick and Gilbert is going to be a NFL prospect next year. Middleton put up big numbers and is very fast. Gilbert shut some quality WRs down, as mentioned before. Although I will say that Hudgins is a great FCS player but I don't see him getting drafted by the NFL. Hudgins is a 4.7 or 4.8 guy in the 40 and he is too small for TE. Where does a player without WR speed and TE size land? Probably ends up like a Daniel Wilcox who went undrafted after a dominating season but still made it in the NFL. I could see Hudgins making it in the NFL if he can get with the right team.

Not sure what that person is complaining about on the UNH end. Who besides Sicko can they say is a definite AA selection?

Last year the TSN teams were very skeptical with way too many ASU players just because of their dominance in the semis and finals. The list looks very good and I must say it was the best list I have seen from TSN in a while.

I think they got it right on the Richmond kids. If anything, Justin Rogers should be on one of the 3 teams. Honorable Mention isn't bad.

Eric McBride may have deserved some consideration at Linebacker.

I am not sure how Lawrence Sidbury doesn't make the first team on defense. He's going to the NFL and he dominated all year long for us.

This was based on the vote of the media and SIDs around the nation, not his picks. I do think Covington should have been higher but that is how the votes went. Covington is a heck of a player and should be a 3rd teamer but at least he was mentioned. xthumbsupx

What does the NFL have to do with FCS all-american teams? Quick answer, nothing at all.

I imagine the All-America teams as picking who the top players are and not solely on stats. There is a LB from SEMO who had 150 tackles and should be considered an All-American based on numbers but he is not on the list.

As for the CBs I can tell you right now that Gilbert and Middleton being NFL prospects is not why I would put them where they are. My reasons are that they are physical, shut down cover corners, fast, athletic, good ball skills, and productive and it just so happens those things make them prospects as well.

A NFL prospect list and All-America list are two different things but there is some correlation to them at times. If a 6'6 WR runs 4.4s but only has 350 yards receiving then obviously he is not an All-American but if I am picking between one who is 6'5 210 and runs 4.4s and great routes and one who is 6'3 220 and runs 4.8s and has similiar numbers, then I am taking the faster and bigger player.

As you said should not be a direct thing, but you can find some correlation in the two different lists. You can be an All-American and not be a NFL prospect but if I am choosing between two productive players and one is bigger, faster, and has NFL potential I am going to take that one so when he plays on Sundays it looks better than the one who is not.

Ask Ricky Santos :p

As I said in my last post, you can be an All-American and not be a NFL prospect but if I am picking between two even players in terms of production but one is much more athletic and going to play on Sundays, then I am taking the one who will play on Sundays. One example of a player who will play on Sundays who I would not select for the All-America team is Don Carey of Norfolk State but I would take him ahead of 80 percent of the CBs on this list because he lacks the numbers. Note that I am only saying the NFL potential would affect my selection if the two players have similar production and at CB you can compare the numbers favorably to those players mentioned.

Toman somewhat showed that Santos was a great player but put up huge numbers due to the system. Find me a QB who is the first to pass for 3,000 yards in his school's system and I will take him over a QB who is just one of 5 or 6 to do it in 15 years.

smallcollegefbfan
January 7th, 2009, 12:38 AM
So Toman is somewhat the same as Santos?

No he isn't but they are both good college players who put up numbers likely due to the pass happy offense they run.

Here are their stats from their most recent year in college

Toman, 3,110 yards, 28 TDs, 15 INTs, 65.1% passing, 6 rushing TDs
Santos- 2,972 yards, 24 TDs, 7 INTs, 73.1% passing, 9 rushing TDs

Their numbers are comparable. It looks like Toman threw more INTs, which comes with being young.

The QB before Santos in his final year

Granieri- 2,595 yards, 22 TDs, 8 INTs, 61.2% passing, 5 rushing TDs.

Looks like that system puts out productive dual threat QBs. Not saying Toman is going to be as good as Santos but he is going to put up good numbers like him. You could argue that Santos had a better years before his senior year and they were much better than Toman in their respective sophomore years. Santos had the intangibles that Toman does not have yet so I will say that I doubt Toman is ever quite the caliber.

... just saying that UNH QBs produce well due to the system.Like Richie and Armanti right?

smallcollegefbfan
January 7th, 2009, 02:19 AM
Like Richie and Armanti right?

Yes. These spread QBs are going to put up huge numbers as well. Santos, Edwards, Williams, etc. are all great players but a player must put up numbers like they did to be serious All-American candidates. Throwing for 2000 yards and 20 TDs in those offenses is not really impressive like it would be in Wofford's offense for example.

There is not necessarily any correlation between an All-American team and a player's NFL value. My point was that Sidbury was clearly a difference maker for Richmond all season long, and anyone who watched the majority of our games would realize this. Belcher from Maine is a solid player, but he didn't lead his team to a title the way Sid did for us.

I don't play the homer card often, but in this case I will. He should have been on the first team.

Congratulations to both Sr K Andrew Wilcox and Jr WR Terrell Hudgins on another great season!!

The graduation of Wilcox will be a huge blow to our special teams considering he singlehandedly won a few ball games for us this year after leading the country in FG/game.

For Hudgins, this is yet another honor in the stellar career of the SoCon's best ever WR. After breaking the Elon and SoCon records for career receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns, Hudgins most certainly has his sights set on breaking a few NCAA records in '09 and improving his stock for the 2010 NFL Draft.

I see what you are saying and Sidbury was very good this year but who do you take off to put him on? Peach won the Buchanan and Belcher was the CAA DEF POY, not Sidbury. Sidbury was the playoff MVP no doubt but Belcher only had one game to show his talent where Sidbury had four.

In this case you can't put a player on just because of NFL talent because his numbers weren't that close to Peach's at the end of the regular season. Peach had 22 TFL and 18 sacks while Sidbury only had 14.5 TFL and 6.5 sacks at the end of the regular season. I only said that I would pick the future NFL player when his stats are closely identical to the one who is not. UCA DE Larry Hart is another player who has comparable or better stats than Sidbury with 43 TT, 21 TFL, and 12 sacks through the regular season.

DT John Faleotese of UC Davis had 32 tackles, 7 1/2 TFL, 5 1/2 sacks.

DT Chris Baker of Hampton had 69 tackles, 16 1/2 TFL, 8 1/2 sacks, 13 hurries.

DT Everette Pedescleaux of UNI had 63 tackles, 11 1/2 TFL, 6 1/2 sacks, 3 forced fumbles.

Faleotese's numbers pale in comparison to Pedescleaux's. Baker's numbers are better, but as a member of the MEAC he also played NC A&T and Howard, bar none two of the worst teams in FCS. In contrast, Pedescleaux played at BYU and played in the brutal MVFC. If you had strength-of-schedule indicators, UNI's would blow Hampton's off the map.

One guess as to who's the first teamers and who's the second-teamer.

I don't know if one, or all three, are NFL-caliber players. But to me it's no contest who should be tops on the all-American list.

I think all three of those players will be NFL bound. Now the UNI and Hampton kids are better players than Faletoese in my opinion but Faletoese has had a great career and I'm sure his name is part why so many people have named him an All-American.

Especially when about 130 players are honored on one list alone, some more than once! xeekx Congrats to SCFF for including the honorable mention players in his post.

Try closer to 200. I don't think they named enough players....

I counted and it was 98 players to be exact. It did look like about 120-150 at first glance but less than 100.

Interesting to note that Armanti Edwards was CSN's Fab 50 All-American Offensive POTY, Josh's Awards POTY as well as the 1st Team QB, AP 1st team All-American, Walter Camp All-American and of course the winner for the Payton award. Impressive resume!

With the addition of being named to the Sports Network All-American 1st team, I wonder how a voter on the Payton award ballot didn’t even have him in the top 6? xwhistlex

I was including the Honorable mentions, to. Quick count cam to 190ish. If there is 26 players on a team (11 each side of ball, kicker, punter and 2 returners) thats over 7 teams worth of players being named "All American". With the other AA lists its from just one team to a 1st-3rd team, from about 30 players- under 100.

I quickly counted 31 from the CAA alone. Almost everyone who got 1st team All CAA was mentioned, along with some 2nd teamers. I would imagine a majority of the 1st team All Conference from a # of the other conferences are on here too. It waters down AA to bestow it on so many players.

Actually 98 is the number of honorable mentions total that I counted. I thought you were solely talking about honorable mention. With the 1st, 2nd and 3rd included then yeah it is more like 190 or so.
