UNA (D2) is conducting a head coach search. Their AD has already met with all of the assistant coaches and told them their contracts will be honored through next year.
So, the next HC will have to use the assistants that are in place and won't be able to bring anyone new in.
My question is. How often does this happen? It's the 1st time I've ever heard of something like this. It seems to me that it would severely handicap their search for a new HC.

Saying their contrcats will be honored mosty likley means they will be paid, not that they will be coaching. It would be highly irregular for a new head coach to not choose his staff. If they wanted the entire staff in place why not just hire one of the cordinators. I would think the are referring just to the fact that the coaches will be paid-- this is common.

The UNA job will be officially posted until Sunday. Linder announced Monday that the current staff would have their contracts honored and the new coach will have that staff next season.
Wallace said not being able to choose his own staff was a factor in his decision.
"I've got a great staff, and I want to continue working with them," he said. "I know that UNA has a great coaching staff, but it is difficult to come into a job where you inherit an entire staff. It's just good for everyone to have the same philosophy in that situation."

Wow thats asnine. Nobody worth a damm will take that job. If they want the staff in place, why not just hire one of the cordinators-- I really dont see another solution.

Terry Bowden, the Division I coach of the year in 1993 while at Auburn, has been hired as head football coach at the University of North Alabama, the TimesDaily has learned.
Bowden, 52, will be officially introduced to the media Thursday morning during a news conference at 11 a.m., sources say.
He will replace Mark Hudspeth, who left UNA on Dec. 13 to become passing game coordinator at Mississippi State.
Bowden posted a 46-16-1 record in six seasons at Auburn. The Tigers were a perfect 11-0 in 1993, his first season at Auburn. At the end of the season, he was chosen the Division I national coach of the year by several organizations.
Bowden has a 111-53-2 overall coaching record but has not coached since leaving Auburn in 1998 under controversial circumstances. He resigned six games into the season after reportedly being told he would be fired at the end of the year.
Bowden, who lettered as a running back at West Virginia, has also been head coach at NAIA Salem College in West Virginia (1983-85) and Samford University in Birmingham (1987-92).
He is the son of legendary Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden.
Most recently, Bowden has worked for ABC Sports, Westwood One Radio network and ESPN.
In fact, Bowden was the color commentator for Westwood One Radio's broadcast of the NCAA Division II National Championship Game in Florence on Dec. 13.
He has also been a motivational speaker in recent years, working with numerous companies nationwide on a variety of issues.
The Lions were 12-2 this year, being eliminated in the national semifinals.

That program won't miss a beat with Terry. He was easily the second best Bowden IMO. He did a great job at Samford and then also at Auburn after taking over the mess that Pat Dye left him.

UNA beat us in the second round of the D-II playoffs two years in a row back in the early 90's. Both years, they went on to win the National Championship. They have won several since then, and with this hire, they will continue winning. I will say this- if North Alabama moves up to FCS, and if Tuskegee follows (not very likely, but they might) the power in FCS football will see a major swing towards the state of Alabama.

This is my first post here. Over the years I've dropped in from time to time to check out whats going on in FCS and now I think it's time to participate a little.
I have to think UNA is planning to move. I think the hiring of Terry Bowden is the perfect remedy for fund-raising. He took Samford from D3 to D1AA very successfully and I think that is what we have in store at UNA. Plus, a UNA grad, Johnny Williams has been involved lately. He was the AD at Troy when they made the move from D2 to D1AA and then to FBS. I don't believe they are thinking about a rapid move to FBS the way Troy did but I think they are ready to let go of the D2 championship game which has been a major reason they haven't already moved.
Travel-wise, the OVC would make more sense for UNA. Our travel miles would be cut in half from what they are now and I think we could be competitive right away in football and baseball. I'm not so sure about the other sports but that could be a work in progress.
On a side note, watching Clint Eastwood on Letterman. He's 78! Here's to good health for a great actor.

The Bowden hire isn't a big news rippler, but it got me thinking: what's up with coaches like Bowden and Glanville. Both wanted FBS jobs over the years and could hardly get interviews. Are they "that bad" that they had to force themselves in hopes of getting interviews, and eventually settling for jobs they initially hoped they'd be able to surpass in the career path?

It's the biggest coaching news rippler I've seen in non-FBS news I've ever seen. Just type his name into a search engine and see that it drew coverage from all sports networks and papers across the country. Didn't see that with UT-Chattanooga or some of the other changes I've seen this year. As for being "that bad" he was 46-22-1 at Samford, and this according to ESPN: With only one freshman class on scholarship, the Bulldogs went to a full Division I-AA schedule in 1989. By 1991, Samford was competing for the national championship. The 1991 Samford team had the best record in school history, 12-2, and made the Division I-AA national semifinals. The Bowden magic was working again.
Of course at Auburn he went 20-0 to start his time there. He took the probation ridden Tigers to 3 bowl games and a 47-16-1 record. If it hadn't been for the last couple of years when the scholarship limitations took their toll causing a lack of juniors and seniors, his record would have been even more impressive. So, I don't think he's "that bad."
Bowden hadn't been interested in coaching for quite some time. He signed an agreement with Auburn not to air all the dirty laundry around their board of trustees in return for a home on the lake and an undisclosed amount of money. He's had a cushy jobs as an analyst, writer, and motivational speaker without the headache and pressure of coaching. This also from ESPN: Although Terry Bowden's bright future is firmly planted in network television, it all began walking the sidelines as a head football coach. Looking back to those years tells you two things about Terry -- number one, he's a winner; and number two, don't ever underestimate him.
But once you've been a coach, eventually you come back (See Dick Vermeil, Bill Snyder, etc) and luckily we were in the right place at the right time with the right kind of offer which I believe includes moving us upward. He did begin to show interest in jobs last year but thankfully West Virginia kept him on the hook just long enough for him to miss out on other openings plus people may worry he's rusty. UNA sure hopes he isn't.

Terry Bowden was clearly back in his comfort zone Monday as he took to the practice field for the first time as North Alabama's football coach.
It was his first time on the field as a head coach in 10 years, but Bowden said the first day of spring practice felt very natural.

Carter makes move from NFL's Lions to UNA
North Alabama's football coaching staff received a nice addition just in time for the start of spring practice.
Pat Carter, who has coached in the NFL for the past six seasons, has joined UNA as a volunteer coach. Carter joined the staff just before spring practice began Monday.
Carter had spent the last three seasons as tight ends coach for the Detroit Lions. When the entire staff was fired after an 0-16 season, Carter was left without a job. But a call to his college coach, Florida State's Bobby Bowden, resulted in Carter joining Terry Bowden's staff at UNA.

The only thing I've got against Pat Carter is he cost former Lion, Jarius Hayes the tightend spot with the Cardinals back in '96. :(
