I'm stunned. Shanahan was king in Colorado, they'd better get one hell of a replacement or ownership will be skewered in the press.

Wow, that came out of left field. He should jump to the top of the short list of most every coaching vacancy in the country.

He was head coach AND Director of Football Operations, which is usually a seperate position. May have been trying to take too much on.

Why do you care? You're not from this state.

As a lifelong Bronco fan, it pains me to see this. But, sadly, I knew it was coming. After having just 1 playoff win since Elway retired and the historic collapse this season, I think this was the natural next step.

I love Coach Shanahan and wish him the best. Of course the next coach better be frickin awesome....and if it is Pete Carroll or someone like that, I'm going to be pissed!!!

All these coaches with similar finishes and Gruden still has a job. Folks around here want him gone.

I think Gruden gets a pass cause of the whole Kiffin thing. But he should definitely be on thin ice now.

WOW!!!!

Unreal!

Course, I do hope my Bears can Greg Babich and bring a REAL DC in. God, why did we let Ron Rivera leave??!!!

I will give Lovie Smith one more year but from NFC champs to 2 straight non playoff years.........unacceptable.

If he wants to rejoin his former OC/current Texans HC Gary Kubiak and his son, Texans OC Kyle Shanahan...he's more than welcome to come to Houston.

He probably will, but lots of fans are still in love with Dungy. Not saying they want him back, but Gruden isn't the public figure Dungy was. People have gotten tired of him especially since he was brought in to beef up the offense.

There isn't any word either way right now.

As a Bronco fan, I want to say that I am glad for what Shanahan has done for the Bronco franchise and the city of Denver. Not many coaches win two Super Bowls in a row.

I will say, however, that it was time for a change. Shanahan didn't have the fire this year, especially in the last three games, to get the Broncos into the playoffs in a very weak AFC West. He let his team collaspe in the end after a three game lead with three games to go.

I will remain a Bronco fan and look for possibly for the former Steeler coach of Bill Cowher to be my top canidate. He has a Super Bowl title and a history of consistantly good teams. He also brings in a defensive presence that has been lacking in the past several seasons in Denver.

I wish Coach Shanahan good luck in his next job. I think he will be very successful with whichever NFL team gives him a chance. I just hope it is not Kansas City or another AFC team.

Shanahan to the Jets maybe?

Jets have their choice now between Cower and Shanahan, two experienced and successful AFC coaches. They'll need them to coach up Matt Cassell.

Shanahan will be snapped up as quickly as he wants to be snapped up. But as in most places, people can out stay their welcome, even with overall success. Andy Reid is starting to face the same song in Philly. Despite winning over 60% of the time during his 10 year stint, he still has not won the 'big one'. There are so many variables to a winning or losing season. I haven't followed Shanahan and the AFC that closely, but it seems most places would kill for him...NY Jets? Try and grab the spotlight from the Giants?

Won't be unemployed long if he just wants to be an HC. Might take longer if he wants to be a VP/HC.

I don't like him, but I respect him as a Coach.

So was I. Now I root for the Chargers almost as much as or more than the Broncos.

I know he was a hometown guy, but the Broncos did not have a pressing need at wide receiver in the 2005 draft. They most certainly had a defensive need, mostly in the secondary, which they tried to address with their draft. So those picks didn't pan out (exception of Darrent Williams, who would still be the starter opposite Champ if he hadn't been gunned down, and Javon Walker would probably still be a Bronco).

So while hindsight is 20/20 and he should have drafted the hometown guy, it's not a reason to be "pissed" about 4 years later.

It's odd, I was just thinking to myself earlier today or yesterday about the Broncos. I was thinking their coach must have been on the hot seat, given the end of their season, but then I remembered it was Shanahan, and figured, he's as safe a coach as there is the NFL. I mean, the 2 Super Bowls were a decade ago, and they really haven't gone anywhere since Elway retired, but how many coaches in the League have 2 rings? Belichick, and that's it (Coughlin and Dungy have a shot at their 2nd this season)

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I never would have guessed Shanahan would be fired like this

I disagree. We needed a third wide out back then. That was when we had an older Rod Smith and really no one else. It wasn't just the fact that we could have had the home grown guy, but it's the fact we needed a playmaker at that position and Vince was and has proven he is that guy.

Surprising move to me, also. I always thought he was somewhat safe as a HC in Denver. He'll get another job fairly quickly.

Oh well, that's life in professional sports (and I include college football and basketball in that category).

A third wideout over anyone on defense? I guess we can agree to disagree then. I think the more pressing need was on the defensive side.

I wouldn't say we had no one else after Rod Smith, we had Ashley Lelie, who, although hadn't really had a break out year, showed flashes of promise. Enough to justify going defense with the first three picks of the draft.

All the Bronco haters are happy about this I can't quite figure out why, the franchise is a shadow of what it was 10 years ago and that decline was on Shanahan's watch. I appreciate what he did but this franchise has been going nowhere for a decade now and a fresh face is what is needed. Watching them since the 70's the last few years have been the least emotional and flatest teams I've ever seen. There is no fire, no urgency, and regardless of the X's and O's if the players are soft it won't matter. Someone needs to come in and light a fire under the entire franchis and the fan base... we're stuck in the past.... Oh he won Super Bowls, yes, but we suck now and have for 10 years... The time has just come for all concerned to part ways. I actually beleive Shanahan is relieved now to be able to get a fresh start somewhere else.
