Rodney Stuckey and Derrick Rose could be poised to become to the Eastern Conference’s future what Chris Paul and Deron Williams are to the Western Conference’s present – the 1 and 1A at point guard.
Rose might win his share of the battles over the next decade, but Stuckey won by knockout in the first meeting between two of the most physically gifted point guards of their generation.
Stuckey scored 17 points in the first half as the Pistons took a 19-point lead, then rescued them after a 12-0 run by Chicago to open the second half cut their lead to one. With the score 58-57, Stuckey knocked down a triple, scored on a baseline drive and went up strong to score in the mid-post to fuel a 10-0 answering run.
Turns out he was just warming up.
Stuckey, the 15th pick in the 2007 draft (Out of Eastern Washington!), had topped his previous career high of 27 by the time the third quarter ended and – with Allen Iverson going to the bench three minutes into the second half with a left groin injury – he kept pouring it on in the fourth quarter, finishing with 40.
