They tried blocking him. They hit him. They tried double-teaming him. They pushed him away from quarterback Cole Bergquist to give the offense some time - any time - to maneuver. They tried to run their running back Chase Reynolds at him to slow him down. And when all else failed, they tried to chop block him.
But nothing Montana could do ended up stopping defensive end Lawrence Sidbury.
Sidbury’s four sacks in the championship game were extraordinary enough. But even that does not do justice to stating how disruptive the Cheltenham, Maryland senior was to Montana’s offense, forcing offensive linemen into the quarterback, spinning around the Grizzlies assigned to block him, almost getting into the heads of the “O” line of the Grizzlies. He’s a major reason why Richmond achieved the biggest win in the history of their program - a physical 24-7 beatdown of Montana to give them their first-ever national championship.
