“The Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association looks forward to this annual academic all-star team announcement,” said Tim Van Alstine, chair of the Football Championship Subdivision Academic All-Star Team Selection Committee and athletics director at Western Illinois University. “Each year we honor outstanding players that represent the true meaning of the word student-athlete and this year is no different. We are proud of their accomplishments both in the classroom and on the field.”


The five finalists
Pierre Banks, Appalachian State, linebacker, 3.91;
Andrew Berry, Harvard, defensive back, 3.78;
Ryan Berry, South Dakota State, quarterback, 3.89;
Andrew Dete, Dartmouth, linebacker, 3.74;
Jim Verlanic, Montana State, offensive lineman, 3.71;He is scheduled to graduate with a double major of Bio-Medical Science and Ecology and Evolution, and plans to attend medical school.
Justin Witzmann, Charleston Southern, defensive lineman, 3.80.

Pierre is actually getting ready to graduate with his Masters Degree in May.... and he's a redshirt senior.

How the heck is Josh Mahoney from UNI not a finalist. He is a 4.0 Finance major at UNI, which is no picnic by any means. He is a true JR and is going to graduate at the end of the year, meaning UNI might not have him next year, unless he takes grad courses. If you saw a UNI game you will realize what Mahoney meant to UNI this past year.


He is a stud on the field and in the classroom, what a joke.
