View Full Version : Soccer is SO lame!!!

I just don't get these other countries. Why is soccer so popular in them? It has GOT to be the most BORING game in the WORLD! It's an absolute miracle to even see a goal scored! A lot of Hispanic folks I know play soccer outside. I made buddies with a couple and took them to a REAL football game...and they were hooked! They now realize that American Football is millions of times more exciting and fun than futbol, or whatever the heck they call it. I guess ignorance is the reason the world outside of the USA loves soccer...they just haven't discovered REAL football!:p

Any other brilliant revelations? How about "Water is so wet?" Or "Snow is cold?"
Soccer can be fun to play, but christalmighty is it a bore to watch. It's popular worldwide becuase it's cheap. All you need is a pitch, something to rig up as a goal and a ball, and any 22 fools can play.

No doubt there's a lot of truth to that, but it's not the ONLY reason it's popular throughout the world. There are plenty of rich countries (mostly Western Europe) where it's a national obsession.
Also, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Barclay's Premiere League (England) has a lot more money invested in it than the NFL.

I would have to say you are correct on that. If you look at some of the contracts these players get as well as how die hard European soccer fans are (i.e. they shell out a lot of money for their clubs/teams/countries merchandise and tickets), not to mention club sponsorship money. If a team gets a crazy billionaire owner he can turn it around in just a couple of years if not that year. Players and coaches have no loyalties and will go where ever they money is. Beckham, Henry, Ronaldinho, etc have all followed the money after playing for teams that are known Champions League power houses (though Henry and Ronaldinho followed the money to other power houses, kind of like a Boston player going to play for the Yankees). Obviously, I like soccer and follow it. I work with German, Dutch and Bulgarian people and I can say it was great to watch the Euro Cup this summer. I can see where people come from on excitement level and there's no real point in arguing which is the better sport because you are always going to have the die hard sports homers who are adamant their form of Football is better and more exciting. I can guarantee when Euro cup, World cup, Champions League Playoffs, or any other soccer game that matters to them comes around... your Hispanic friends will watch football over football any day. Like I said, I love both sports, but there's really no point in arguing why one is better, to each his own.

True, but the sport attained popularity in those countries well before they achieved their current levels or prosperity. It was popular among the working class 100 years ago, who were far from prosperous.

There is no point to even discussing the beautiful game on an american football board. The majority of american football fans don't care to take the time to actually learn and follow soccer. If they did, they would realize that it is one of the best spectator sports.

Soccer is too easy to defend, therefore there is very little scoring. Granted, some soccer players are very talented dribbling the ball around with their feet but any decent athlete can easily defend somebody kicking a ball around tyring to kick it in a net. How anyone can watch a game on TV is beyond me.

xthumbsupx All you soccer naysayers need to get off the couch and go out one Sunday afternoon and try to play the game. There is a lot more to the game than meets the eye on TV xnodx
I did that years ago when my sons were young and first started playing to learn more about the game. Running up and down the field (instead of playing my position) was exhausting. Then this guy says come over here, stand next to me, face that guy that is about to kick the ball and cover your nuts xeekx

Yeah this is pretty much what I was saying. There's no winning this argument of Football vs Football. One football is continuous and does not show commercials, the other takes 30 second breaks minimum between each play and cuts to commercial every chance it gets... quality entertainment. I guarantee 99% of the people responding to this couldn't run for 45-90 minutes straight in the dead of summer heat and humidity of Georgia let alone play soccer at all. Obviously non of us would be on this web page if we didn't like American football but there's no need to berate or delineate which is better, worse or stinks. Too many people have strong opinions on the matter to sway a discussion one way or the other. Thus, to each his own opinion. I have my own, I choose to like both and play both sports.

It's perception. Most everywhere else grew up with it as a sport of choice. Show those people an American football game and they HATE it.
Part of it has to do with your childhood and how it was perceived.

I can't hate on soccer even though i barely watch it. I do enjoy the World Cup however. I love to watch and attend Races/NASCAR and golf events. Those are two sports i know a lot of people think are "lame" to watch. I can appreciate basically any competitive event.

Take it FWIW... I played soccer growing up, I've coached youth soccer for 6 years and I generally watch every US National game I can. That said, soccer does suck as a spectator sport for the casual fan and there is a LOT wrong with the sport. The game is a defensive one, yet any foul committed in a very large box resorts in a penalty kick that is what, 90%? effective in producing a goal? That's bad. The other thing I don't like about soccer are the dives and the stalling of the game when a team is up or when they need to get back on defense. Both are VERY unsportsmanlike. My fixes for soccer...
1. Remove offsides.
2. Yellow card for any player from the other team that touches the ball after a ref has made his call, either on throw in or free kick.
3. Actually CALL dives.
4. Move the penalty kick dot back 10 more yards.

I played soccer up until high school. I wanted to play football, but I was too big and would have been put with kids 2-3 years older than me. My wife played in high school and in college. Two of my daughters play as well. So I know its fun to play and watch your kids play.
It's a good girls game.

Soccer is a great Sport. Yes Football is much better in many respects. By far these are my favorite sports. Hockey and soccer are on the same level when played correctly. That means no diving and no fighting. Fighting in the Hockey and the diving (pretending a foul has occured) in Soccer take away from the game in my opinion. But some people like the fighting.
However, Soccer is by far better than Baseball. But those that like baseball should have the same ability to like Soccer, except soccer has more action to follow. They can be equally as boring to watch unless you know the sport. Then you realize the strategy and the skill involved to play both and can really get into them.
But I hate professional Baseball, Basketball, and Hockey. All three have been ruined by greed, fighting, or lack of team play (Basketball for the last one).

BTW, American football or (soccer) football can't hold a candle to Aussie Rules Football. So few rules that you can learn them all by watching for 5 minutes. Refs have VERY few calls to make. No protecting the QB, no contact after 5 yards penalty, no 6 men on the line of scrimmage, no diving, no whining... pure sport. xnodx

I enjoy World Cup soccer, I think it's awesome and amazing to watch. And I also try to watch the US Mens National team whenever I can. But like every sport, soccer has it's pro's and con's.
I played when I was a youngin', from age 5 to age 10. Then I switched to football.

Aw man, Aussie Rules!!!!!!!!!! The glory days of ESPN early on when they didn't have enough program to play during the day and they showed Aussie Rules - we actually started playing that outside it was so awesome. Seriously, how that game hasn't taken off world-wide is a crime. I was a big Fitzroy fan. Essendon too.

I've always thought rugby union combined the best aspects of soccor and football, the continous play, plus the tackling. I know after playing football in HS and College, I thoroughly enjoyed playing rugby for the next 10-12 years.

Myth: You sprint a lot in soccer.
Here's a drinking game: If you can stay awake, watch a soccer game with a friend, pick a team & when someone on your team sprints, you drink. You'll be pissed off you wasted 90 minutes & you'll still be sober when the game is over.

Obviously it's easy to defend, ergo all the 1-0 games. I've played pick up soccer games with some decent soccer players in the past. I had zero offensive capabilities having never played organized soccer before, but it wasn't that hard to prevent a ball dribbler from getting by me and cover my zone.
