I was curious as to how many of the schools that have I-AA NC titles also won a NC at DII.

And did some of the I-AA title holders start their program initially at the I-AA level ?

I would doubt that any jumped from NAIA to I-AA, but that would be interesting to know also.

Delaware won a D-II title in '79, spent '80 in the transition phase and started full I-AA competition in '81. The Hens made the I-AA title game in '82, losing by a field goal to EKU. Won their first I-AA title in '03.

UD was in the Small College/College Division until the NCAA began the Division nomenclature in '73. The Hens were D-II from '73-'79.

The Blue Hens were also deemed Small College National Champs in '46 (by AP), in '71 (AP and UPI) and '72 (AP & UPI). That was before the NCAA had playoffs.

I think maybe only Delaware. Youngstown State and Western Kentucky came close in DII.

Furman has always been D-I (at least as long as those designations have existed). SoCon joined I-AA from I-A in 1982.

The Montana State BobCats did, in fact they won the Small College Division also before Division II in 1956. They won the I-AA Championship in 1984 and the Div. II Championship in 1976.

Well, I stand corrected. I didn't realize the BigSky was DII prior to I-AA.

Did I accidently put this in Other Sports, or did it get moved ?

This topic should be under I-AA Discussion.

Ralph can you move it, please ?

I checked. Montana State and Delaware are indeed the only two schools to have titles in D-II and I-AA. There may be some others with Small College Division titles though.

Lehigh came close to D-IAA in 1979 losing in the finals to Eastern Kentucky after winning the NCAA D-II Championship over Jacksonville State in 1977. The following year, Lehigh was ranked #1 heading into the playoffs only to lose to EKU, again, in a thriller at old Taylor Stadium that was a classic.

The 1956 championship was in NAIA.

Discussing D-II championships belongs under I-AA discussion?

The topic is a combination of DII and I-AA titles, not just DII National Championships.

NDSU has three national championships in the former College Division: 1965, 1968, 1969, and five DII national championships:1983, 1985, 1986, 1988, and 1990.

Of course, no playoffs for the I-AA transitioning NDSU, but starting in 2008, watch out!! ;) :D

The topic is a combination of DII and I-AA titles, not just DII National Championships. Why exactly are D-I and D-II being lumped together? Maybe the thread should be "How many non-D-I championships has your team won?"
