Did anyone else see the 60 minutes spot on Pete Carroll and his work with curbing gang violence in LA? I never knew anything about him besides that he was the USC coach. It doesn't seem like many coaches get out and do stuff like this to better the community.

Does anyone else know anything about any other coaches?

I had no clue as well and I like to think that I am somewhat knowledgeable about FBS football. He obviously doesn't go around bragging about it which may explain why it was a surprise to many of us.

Joe Paterno has donated millions of dollars to Penn State. He has endowed academic scholarships at Penn State and the campus library bears his name due to donating the bulk of the funds to build/improve it.

Andy Talley has won Awards for starting a bone marrow donor program amongst his players (it's mandatory). If a player is a match, donating marrow takes precedent over playing in a game and a player. He's even got other coaches into it including Bagnoli from Penn and Golden from Temple.

If I had been a stud ball player I always said I would want to play for Pete Carroll. That 60 minutes piece was great

As a fan I cannot stand Pete Carroll's often child-like arrogance but he is a good player's coach.

As an opposing fan. Of course all the rest of the Pac-10 fans hate Pete Carroll, because he completely dominates them. Every now and again teams catch em' but Coach Carroll has totally turned USC and hopefully the city of LA around

Pete Carroll is a great guy, but c'mon, he turned around USC. How hard is that really?

I saw it advertised all day during the nfl games and was very intrigued... what a great story and what a great guy... very impressive... it makes you feel good that there are people doing these types of things to help make the world a better place everyday...

I watched the Barney Frank and mortgage crisis pieces in their entirety and only caught the first five minutes or so of the Carroll piece due to the start of Cowboys v Giants. I saw them go through his history of coaching failure in the NFL, his classy response to his detractors in the newspapers, and his win-forever coaching philosophy at SC. I didn't catch the portion about whatever he's doing in LA.

Like I said, Pete Carroll is a great guy, but it would impress me more if he had gone to a MAC school and turned it around, or a Rutgers, or Syracuse, or Buffalo, etc. USC is an institution and he's simply the caretaker.

I have a newfound respect for the guy. Not because of what he's done at USC (it's only football after all, it doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things), but because of what he is doing off the field in LA. If you missed the piece last night, then you probably have no idea what that is.

It sounds like the non-USC part of the last piece was worthwhile, and sorry I missed it. I'll have to check CBS.com (or such) for that portion.

I watched it and I must say that you've got to give credit to a guy who makes $4,000,000/year and is willing to go out at 1:00 AM to contribute his time and efforts to what appears to be a losing task.

He is simply trying to keep some of his future recruits out of jail. :)

I love Pete Carroll.. I despised him for the longest time, but after i realized his work in the community, he's morphed me into a person who roots for the Trojans (I root for I-A teams based on their coaches)

Hypothetical scenario: You are a blue-chip high school player. You are being recruited by both USC and Notre Dame. You visit South Bend in January (20 degrees, windy, with snow). You then visit Southern California in January (70 degrees and sunny). You see the women (or lack thereof) on each campus. You note the football prowess of each school over the past several years.

Which school do you choose?

Now think about which coach has the tougher job. That's the only point I'm making with Carroll. I like the guy.

I think both Jobs are equally as difficult because Notre Dame you have the fallback that kids are being drawn to the warm climate schools. But you still have to win. USC is a pro environment and what kid wouldn't want to play there? so if it doesn't pan out you're screwed

No doubt. And it sure pans out easier when you get better players.

Not a big USC fan, but I applaud the work that Carroll and other coaches do for their communities.
