Iowa State's Gene Chizik will be the next head football coach at Auburn, sources told Dennis Dodd of CBSSports.com on Saturday.
On Friday, Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard acknowledged that Auburn AD Jay Jacobs recently contacted him to speak with Chizik about the Tigers vacancy.
"Auburn's interest in Gene speaks to his (Chizik's) reputation," Pollard said in a Friday statement. "We saw that same potential in Gene two years ago. He is an outstanding football coach, tremendous recruiter and inspiring leader. When your organization has talented staff members, other schools express interest in their services."
Chizik was the defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Auburn from 2002-04. Under Chizik in 2004, the Tigers allowed a national-low 11.3 points per game en route to an unbeaten season.
Chizik then left for Texas. He spent two seasons as Mack Brown's assistant head coach and defensive coordinator, helping the Longhorns to the 2005 national championship.
Chizik took over at Iowa State for Dan McCarney following the 2006 season and was regarded among the nation's best young coaches when he took the job. But he's gone just 5-19 in two seasons at Iowa State -- including a 2-10 mark in 2008.
The Cyclones went winless in Big 12 play this season, and their win total has dipped in each of the past three seasons.
What happened to Turner Gill? I know, its south Alabama.

I think everyone thinks this was a bad hire. Mark Schalabach said on ESPN today that people around the SEC told him that Turner Gill will never coach in the SEC because his wife is white and that is just too taboo for the "good ole boys". I hope Auburn sucks for a decade for this terrible decision.

I am shocked Gill didnt land at Syracuse or now Auburn. It is amazing what he has done with Buffalo. A few years ago Buffalo was getting crushed by Patriot League schools and they now won the MAC. Gill is a great coach.

I can honestly say not a single ISU fan is sad to see him go. Chizik took the hardest job in the Big 12 and not only didn't do anything with it but made it even worse.
I can't for the life of me see where anyone with any brains at Auburn think this was a good move. I mean, what precisely makes them think Chizik will be better than Tuberville?

Exactly. Chizik was a great D-Coordinator at Auburn and Texas and although ISU is a difficult place to coach at he did nothing there. You would think Auburn would have gotten a guy that proves he deserves the job.

ISU had been reasonably competitive before Chizik got there. I believe the Cyclones had done to 5 bowls in 7 years prior to 2006. The last two years in Ames have been a disaster under Chizik. I think this a terrible how for ISU.

Auburn needs to put a "no Colored people" sign in the AD Dept.

While Gill would've been a better hire than Chizik you can't chalk up the hire as racial motivated just because he didn't get the job Klean. There have been tons and tons of coaching openings in the country where the perceived "best hire" by the public didn't get the job.

Chizik makes sense given his past history with Auburn. As the article mentions, he was their D-Coordinator just a few years ago, and helped put together a pretty solid defense. It's as close as Auburn will admit to saying they screwed up in firing Tuberville, who'd be their best coaching option anyway...
(although, I was of the opinion they should have hired Tony Franklin...)

Klean can and that's the only reason this thread was started. I hate it for Turner Gill as this should've been his job BAR NONE. Klean ignores the fact that there was another thread on this already and decides to vent his displeasure at Auburn's white man policies and while he may be 100% correct in his displeasure, it ruins all of AGS that any discussion about this will be interrupted by Klean's displeasure of the situation thanks to "the man."
Bottom line, Auburn sucks, they deserve what they get in Chizek, and every white man is a racist in Klean's eyes. xthumbsupx xthumbsupx

And before you get your drawers in a wad Klean, I just went and lambasted an Auburn board for their decision not to hire Gill. xthumbsupx

I'm glad Gill didn't get the job. He should continue to build Buffalo until a better job comes up. Auburn isn't the right job.
