looks like I'll have to watch the game just to laugh at the crowd. you should read some of the comments by the Maryland team. They're trying to convince the themselves they're glad to be there.

You know you've hit the big time when you get Roady's Truck Stop to sponsor your bowl game.

It's almost as impressive as the Sun Bowl's sponsor:

The blue turf looks good at night when the stadium is full, but it looks really bad during the day (during the humanitarian bowl)

You asked.

10 reasons why there is a bowl game in Boise.

10. Gaurantees Boise State an appearance in a bowl (Idaho too, if they ever qualify).

9. Showcases the blue turf to a national audience.

8. Forces FBS into some creative flying itineraries.

7. Lures southern teams with the prospect of learning how to ski.

6. Montanan's are able to drive to an FBS bowl game (if they ever want to).

5. Reno said no (so did Salt Lake City and Spokane).

4. Boise is still talked about between Christmas and New Year's

3. Only place to make snow angels in the parking lot before the game.

2. Hot buttered rum and a cozy fireplace are good things.

and the number one reason...

1. Boise is tropical...compared to the rest of the Northwest.xthumbsupx

I drove from Missoula to the H-Bowl back in January of 2004 to see Georgia Tech play Tulsa and it was probably the worst drive of my entire life. You either have to be stupid (like I was) or a huge fan of one of the teams playing (like I was) to want to make that road trip.

Bascially, you're entire post is why.
They chose a blue turf a few years back to "be different." It's pretty much free publicity.
I worked with some Boise St. alums. Their attitude about the turf is, "We don't care if you like it or hate it. What matters is you're talking about it!"

My parents friends are huge Terp boosters (club level Comast Arena season ticket hodlers) They've gone to every bowl game since Fridge has taken over, usually take my parents along. I asked them if they were going to this game, ...they laughed at me.

They're lucky the team is going. xlolx I'd hope FSU would decline going to this bowl if their season was bad enough to warrant an invite. xlolx

pretty stupid bowl in my opinion as is the one in detroit and the one in toronto (at least those are in a dome) but bowl games are meant to be special... a reward for a good season... instead some of these teams get sent into the frozen tundra... i wouldnt mind but i couldnt imagine the players enjoying it too much...

I guess it works as motivation, you go there this year you work harder not to end up there again. Kind of like the NIT or that new tourney they added last year.

Ideally yes, but in reality no. Bowls are an opportunity for the host community to bring in tourism and money. As a result, a 6-6 team with a large traveling fan base will get a bowl bid over a 10-2 team that lacks the same reputation. I recall a 10-2 Nothern Illinois team not getting a bowl bid in a favor a 6-6 team a few years ago.

In theory that's correct but I think this bowl would draw better with two western teams. No way a team from the east will bring lots of fans for this game. To some (including me) games like this aren't a reward, it means you fell short of your goal. A New Year's Eve or New Year's day Bowl seems like a reward. Just my two cents.

That is my point - bowls aren't a reward. They're an excuse to host a game and try and make money. 6-6 teams don't deserve to be rewarded, but if they are from a BCS conference they will play in a bowl game.

I agree that this game would draw better if two (or at least one) western team were involved.

Excellent points. The Insight Bowl in Tempe this year has already sold over 50,000 tickets, and they expect to top 55,000. Not bad for a piss-ant bowl game. This year's matchup is Minnesota and Kansas, 2 perennially mediocre to bad football programs with fanbases that are starving for winners. Thus, they travel well for that rare bowl bid.

Note: Yes, I know KU finished in the Top 5 last year and won the Orange Bowl, but historically speaking, they generally suck.

I live in MD and have many Terp friends but I don't think I will be able to watch the game on that ugly a$$ blue turf. If I was being recruited by Boise State I'd have to tell them unless they change that smurf turf field I am not interested.

Sounds like the stands will be empty.

"It has a real positive impact whether it's locals or whether it's out of town folks," said Bobbie Patterson, Executive Director for the Boise Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Patterson says on average a visitor spends about $240 a day when they come to the city. With the H-Bowl a week after the Poinsettia Bowl this year the hope is those BSU fans who made the trip to California will be back to help out come December 30th.

"It generates enthusiastic spending," said Patterson.

As of Monday afternoon the University of Maryland says it's sold about 16 tickets to the game. The University of Nevada says it's sold 8 so far.

Agreed! According to Mapquest it is only a 6:39, 421.5 mile ride from Reno to Boise. With today's gas prices, that wouldn't be spending a fortune like getting to other bowl sites would. Maybe the Nevada folks just have a been there, done that, have the pictures attitude? xconfusedx xconfusedx :p

Speaking of meaningless bowl games, I'll start paying attention to the local press to see how many Sled Dog fans are heading to Toronto for their blockbuster versus Buffalo. xwhistlex xwhistlex xwhistlex xwhistlex

UNR, like UNLV, is largely a commuter school. Enrollement is only about 12,000. Neither school has ever had great fan bases for football, so this is not a surprise.

What is really stupid is that Maryland could have been part of a big selling game at Fed Ex vs Navy.

Why Maryland is afraid of Navy, I'll never know.

I would have gone to that game. It could have sold out. Instead the school is going to have to eat a very large block of tickets.

At least the short-lived Seattle Bowl could be played at Safeco Field with a retractable roof.

Has there ever been talk about an all-star game for FCS Players? D-II has the cactus bowl which used to be the Snow Bowl up in Fargo.
