View Full Version : Dead Pool for NCAA football programs

You've all heard of those celebrity "Dead Pools" where people try to guess which famous person will kick the bucket first (I'll take Ted Kennedy for 2009 thank you very much). But how about a "Dead Pool" for college football programs? This is across all divisions mind you. I realize that we're all college football fans here, and most of us would hate to see our alma maters drop the sport. But lets face it, sometimes, given a school's enrollment (including gender ratio), location, facilities, endowment, alumni giving, etc... football is not a good fit.

So, which school do you think will drop the sport next? It may not happen in the next year, but within a few years.

I vote for Cheyney (D-II, Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference). They're really really really f--king terrible. I don't think they've even won 20 games since 1990. The school has smallest enrollement of the 14 state supported schools in PA. On top of that, the taboo of dropping football among those schools was broken when Mansfield ended their program.

You must be good at these. Did you pick John Paul II this year?
We're looking for programs that haven't been dropped yet.

Good one! They're like the Radio Shack of college football. Who goes to play there? Do you know anyone? Who watches their games? Anyone?

4-5 Years ago, I'd say they were a good candidate. But barring any major developments, Owl football should still be around 5 years from now.

I think the fact that they are a HBCU is the only thing that will save Cheyney Football.

In the 70's, they were competitive, even going 9-2 in '79, but getting destroyed by Lock Haven in the (long since abandoned) PSAC title game. Then, things fell off drastically. Since going 4-5-1 in '80, they've not won more than 3 games in a season.
Holy crap! I just double checked. Since 1990, they're 11-195-1 xeekx xeekx xeekx xeekx

They're on a slow decline and I think their admin wants it that way

Oh yes and they have probaly had at least 10 seasons of 0 wins since 1980. Oh by the way the PSAC title game is back. The top teams in the East and West play in the last game of the regular season. The regularly scheduled game for each team will be cancelled (how dumb). For example this year West Chester won the east and Cal the West. They played twice in the regular season and could have met again in the playoffs if WCU advanced another round.

Didn't Savannah State actually win 4 or 5 games this year?

Dartmouth!

Again, schools who've already stopped fielding a football team are not eligible for this list!

Didn't help Maryland-Eastern Shore, did it?

I'm from Texas. They build a football field before they build any academic buildings.

I can see Georgetown getting rid of their program in the next couple of years if the school continues to show a lack of support and a real facility isn't completed.

I think its a bit different. PA has 14 state universities and Cheyney is perpetually complaining about not getting enough funding blah bal blah. I meant I just think it will be bad PR and they will go to great lengths to save the program. They have only won like 2 or 3 conference games in the last 15 years--the program is utterly pathetic. Being the only HBCU in PA is the only reason I can think of that they still have a team.

Temple?

Temple might not be out of the woods. Temple signed a 15 years lease to play at Lincoln Financial Field in 2003 and it has been stated that once the lease runs out the Owls will have to find a new home. TU will face some tough decisions in the next 3-4 years as 2017 grows closer. Temple's options include playing at a proposed soccer stadium, an on campus facility or they return to Franklin Field.

Playing in a spruced up Franklin would be good for all parties IMO.

Tulane might be shaky.

I'm thinking Temple, Duquesne, Georgetown and Northeastern will survive, however.

Lincoln PA is an HBCU that just started football this year.

How stable are the NEC and PFL teams? Some of them have to play multiple sub-D-I opponents and struggle to get 1000 people to show up for games, but this doesn't necessarily mean they are about to fold. Anybody have any info on these teams?

Sorry but I don't think there is any way an FBS team is dropped. I could see the athletic department dropping to FCS before they drop the program completely.

As an aside, since the two divisions (I-A and I-AA) were created, has there been an FBS (or I-A) school to drop football?
