Call me old fashioned, but football games should have male announcers....let the chicks announce women's contests.....
I just can't accept females being pushed into the play by play or color seats.....and I have never heard a good one.......for that matter not that many of the guys are all that good.

I also don't think guys should do women's soccer or basketball games...
Go ahead flame away.....even if I'm half serious.

I basically don't like any announcer... xlolx

However I listened to Pam Oliver do a game and also another gal who's name I can't remember (some years ago now)
and I loved it..!!!! she knew everything about the teams and the offenses they ran (solid announcing)

Ginger Rogers had to do everything Fred Astair did... only backwards and in High heels xlolx

at the FCS level: I think female announcers know more because they have to... (see above Ginger Rogers quote)

I'll take Erin Andrews or Rachel Nichols on the sideline, but yeah I have to agree for play by play I think it is just more natural for a man to do it.

I don't really care about play-by-play. I've met broadcasters like Andre Ware and Pam Ward and various ASU games when I covered games for The Appalachian. If you not the sport, and know what you're talking about, go ahead and do it.

But PLEASE, let Erin Andrews continue to work on the sidelines :D

If they're good at the job, then I don't care about the gender. It sounded awkward at first, but its grown on me.

My problem is with the second rate ESPN 2 announcers who spend all their time on special interest instead of on the game. Every non FBS game I've watched on ESPN2 has been focused on one player or one coach. IE the Semi-Final game in 2004 where W&M got beaten handily by the Dukes. Watching the entire game in FF makes you think that W&M won that game and won it entirely by Lang Campbell. Every single time out was spent on a close-up on him. All I can say is the announcers missed a very good game.

Why is that? Is it because it has been the norm for so many generations? That doesn't make it natural, it makes it the status quo.

And to the other aspects of the reporting. What seems more natural to you? A guy standing around a locker room looking at a bunch of naked men or a woman standing around a locker room looking at a bunch of naked men? Personally, I wouldn't mind that job

Chick announcers need to be strippers with 5 inch FMP's and in bikini's . Why keep the pretense that they are there to be anything but window dressing

Now you GSU folks don't take this personal, but Tracy Hamm is now a color commentator and he is the absolute worse I have ever heard. Not to mention that it looks like he has not missed many meals lately.

With his diction and butchering of the English language, he is not a good representative of that fine GSU edumacation

I recall a woman announcer doing a I-AA/FCS game last year and she did a very good job. I do not mind the gender of the voice, so long as it is being informative and not there for 'window dressing'. Oliver and Ward are very credible from what I have seen and heard.

I can't disagree with what you said, but I also think that it was to do with the fact that 99.9% of the people that play football are male. Also when you talk football most of the time you talk with guys. I have no problem with female sportscasters, I think Hannah Storm is one of the best Sports jounalists we have.

That's funny. Another one who is just plain bad (speaks fine, just annoying and not good, too biased) Coach Sam Wyche....unless you are a Furman fan that is.

Regarding females as announcers, I agree w/ some of the other post. As long as they are good and follow the sport, I don't have as much of a problem w/ it. I don't think it's necessary to have a female reporter on the sidelines for the sake of having a female on the sideline.

She may not have the voice, but she does have man hands xwhistlex

She did an ASU game when we had our old-school press boxes. She's cool, knows what's going on. Not to mention if she's not exactly sure of something she'll ask someone who does. She asked me and another sports writer about stuff related to the school and division in general - to make sure she was right.

As an up and coming sports broadcaster, I add my voice to those who say that if the broadcasters know what theyre talking about, it doesnt matter what gender they are, I am learning from watching and listening to those people and I'll hopefully follow in their footsteps.

What is a cover 2? What is a 3 technique? What is a zone blitz? An inside zone? a hot route? I doubt you know this essential FB terms and what they describe. No offense I just want someone who knows what they are talking about.

It is sad but it will always be this way no matter how much a woman may know about football many guys will believe that we know absolutely nothing. This board is a prime example. I really don't think it matters squat what gender you are when it comes to being a sports announcer. If you know what you are talking about that should be all that matters. It bugs the heck out of me when I watch a BCS game and they go on and on talking about the championship game when it is decided by polls rather than on the field like FCS. I may not know everything about the game but I don't profess too. Give women credit for enjoying the sport and yes we do know more about it then what colors the team wears.

My favorite female announcer is the one (her name escapes me) who was on live tv when a drunk Broadway Joe Namath tried to put the make on her. Joe was the "off" color announcer.

Second favorite goes back to when Atlanta was in the Super Bowl. The female announcer kept refering to the Atlanta team as the Hawks. Well she did use a bird name rather than the Braves.

Actually, I enjoy Susan Waldman with the Yankees.

As long as everyone is judged by the content of their broadcast, who cares if the announcer is male or female? If they're only there for guys to drool over, they don't belong. But if they know their stuff, they have every right to be there with the guys.

Locally here, Regina Pocotnie (sp?) does a really good job from the sidelines during Lehigh games, as well as the MVFC sideline reporter (whose name escapes me) for the games that showed up on FCS. But both of them are really good. I can think of a dozen play-by-play/color commentators that probably could be sacked in favor of these two alone.

Some of you guys are nothing but a bunch of sexist pigs who think women are only here to satisfy your, um, urges. Get over yourselves! Women can do anything that men can! (I am male, by the way, and one reason women like me so much is because I RESPECT THEM- it's not all about the T&A)

JMU2K_DukeDawg

Simple reasons for why females sound bad when broadcasting football games:

1) High voices - they then sound girly, and this is a violent sport played by men. For all that is holy, give us our manly sport without sounding like a squeaky mouse!

2) Low voices - they then sound like lesbains, plain and simple. It will ruin my experience of watching a game if I have to sit there listening to a lesbian all day long.

Sexist? Perhaps, but I don't care. I love women, and I love the many wonderful things women do in our lives and in society. I love my mom, my sister and my week-old baby niece especially! But there are just a few things, not many, but a few that I would like to still have as a reminder of days when men could be men and women could be women. Those lines have been blurred, sometimes for the advancement and sometimes to the detriment of society.

A man can study anatomy, become a doctor and specialist in gynecology too, but do I think he should? Not really.

We all have our preferences. That in and of itself does not make one sexist. Believing that one sex is better than the other, however, does. This is not about being "good enough" to cover football, it's much more about tastes and preferences. My girlfriend throws up a little in her mouth every time she sees a game that is being commented by a female, and she LOVES football. I suppose she is sexist too. Gimme a break.

Now that is a scary thought, being Janet Reno's OBGYN. When she fainted on that stage they needed a forklift to get her up.
