View Full Version : Eagles and Blocked Field Goals

In an obscure stat, the Eagles are now 2-0 in games where they give up a blocked field goal that is returned for a TD as the second quarter expires, giving up one to the 49'ers and another yesterday to the Giants. Both games saw the Eagles respond well that adversity by winning the actual game. No word yet on whether they plan to employ this strategy over the last 3 regular season games. xthumbsupx

I find it hilarious that a 7-5-1 team with a tie to the Bengals is still in the playoff conversation. I got an email from a Cowboys fan friend of mine a couple of weeks back after the Ravens loss giving me crap about the Birds, McNabb, and Kevin Kolb. Well, I finally got a chance to fire back today. Here's the text:
His original email, dated Nov 24 (day after Eagles lost to Ravens):
So what’s up with the Birds? First a tie last week--and who knew we had ties in the NFL?!? (HAHAHAHA!!!!! Thanks Donovan!), then benching McNabb this week when that game was still winnable. Now going back to McNabb for the next game. WTF? Mixed signals galore. So what’s the buzz in Philly now--stay with McNabb or go with Kolb? Or trade another first round draft pick to the Cowboys and pick up a mediocre QB later in the draft? (Sorry, that was cheap but I couldn’t resist!) Maybe that Garcia guy is still around somewhere too? (That was cheap too, sorry again.)
My response this morning:
Re the NFL, isn't it funny how quickly things change? I was really sorry to see your Cowboys completely collapse yesterday after holding a seemingly safe 13-3 lead in the 4th quarter. And who is that #81 on your team that was yelling at his coaches and teammates? Someone needs to reel that guy in before he turns into a cancer. And who is that big tight end of yours that keeps running the wrong routes? Is he a rookie? Gosh man, I thought you guys had a playoff spot wrapped up and the Eagles were eliminated judging from the mail you sent below. Maybe not? But that's OK, you guys have an easy road right? WHAT? You have the Giants, Ravens, and Eagles (in Philly) up next? OUCH! But you guys are pretty good late in the season right? Lemme check... Damn, maybe not. Looks like you guys are 4-7 with a playoff loss after Nov 30th the past three years, while the Eagles are 9-4 with a playoff victory in the same span. Good luck!

Based upon how I'm interpretting the standings, the Eagle's best shot at the playoffs involves them winning their last 3 games and finishing 10-5-1. But winning out isn't enough. They need the Falcons to lose one more game. In that scenario, they're likely to be the #6 seed.
Am I missing something?

I think that's right, but you can fool with scenarios here: http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/playoffscenario?algorithm=custom&14=01450004&15=05010450&16=01400451&17=10014400
I think it's very unlikely the Eagles will get above 6th, mostly because unless Tampa or Carolina really falters down the stretch, the 2nd place team from the South will be 11-5, and ahead of the 10-5-1 Eagles

The way the year is going, if the Eagles win out, I think they'll be in.
