Osunde, who was born in Nigeria but moved to the United States when he was about 3, is the youngest of four brothers. Their neighborhood was loaded with good athletes, and the competition was ferocious. Osunde learned fast.

The family landed in Bloomsburg because their father, Egerton, was an African history professor at Bloomsburg University. Egerton Osunde, who died in 1998, wanted his sons to concentrate on their schoolwork before they played sports.

“As long as they didn’t take away from our education, he didn’t mind,” said Osagie Osunde, the third oldest, who later played at West Chester (Pa.) University.

The eldest, Isoken, gave up organized sports to concentrate on medical school. The second oldest, Uyi, played defensive end at Connecticut and was briefly with the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills before a back injury ended his career.

Osayi was perhaps the best athlete, a prodigy. As a 14-year-old junior at Central Columbia High School, he won the state javelin championship. He graduated when he was 16, and picked Villanova over colleges that wanted him to go to prep school.

“I was an honor student in high school — I wasn’t going to do that,” Osunde said.
