Coaches Select Inaugural SoCon All-Freshman Football Team

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference football coaches have selected a 25-player all-freshman team, comprised of 11 offensive, 11 defensive and three special teams players.

One of the youngest teams in the nation, Georgia Southern, led the way with seven total selections, including four on defense, two on special teams and one on offense. Appalachian State, Furman and Western Carolina each placed four players on the all-freshman team while The Citadel and Samford each earned two all-freshman team citations. Elon and Wofford both received one spot on the squad.

Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own players in the voting process.

Yeah, after Van Gorder it will take some time, but GSU will be back. I just hope they don't rush to FBS after the ban is lifted.

Shippy is a name that sticks out to me. I know South Carolina recruited him some and Newberry wanted him badly before GSU got him. He was a 3-star player coming out of HS. I really expect big things from him. He and E.J. Webb will be great anchors to that defense for the next few years.

Shippy actually beat out Quentin Taylor, a transfer from Ole Miss, to start in our final game at Furman.

You can add Dubose to that list also. He had a terrific game against Furman and was named SoCon Defensive Player of the Week.

I can't wait to see what he does in his remaining 3 years here.

Shippy has a good chance to be a great one. He, Webb, DJ Smith, Roman, Jones, Dubose, B. Smith, etc. prove the SoCon has a talented group of young linebackers. Should be interesting down the road.

He is another one on the all-freshman team too. GSU is going to be set at LB for at least two more years, maybe three if they get a replacement for Webb in two years.

I think you're referring to Dion Dubose. He had a great game against Furman. Shippy has been getting some playing time at the OLB spots all year long though.

This list is a sham without Mike Niam from Wofford on it.

GSU would have had at least 3 other freshmen on that list as well. Brent Russell didn't make it because of an injury, and Watts and Baker were kicked off the team.

Remember the name, Brent Russell, as a true Freshman, he beat out two Seniors for the starting NG position. He got hurt early in the UGAy game and missed the entire season. He will be back as a Rs-Fr next year and is a lock for the All-Freshman team if he can stay healthy.

If you throw Russell into the mix, we're returning 9 of the defensive players who started against and shut Furman down in our last game this year. xthumbsupx

...and Brent Gordon, who the coaches were really high on and would have probably been a starter at LB, should be healed and ready by fall as well.

Not one Moc on any of the lists. Not one 1st or 2nd teamer not even a freshman. How pathetic. I guess the coaches kid throwing for 0 TD and 9 Int in just 87 attempts doesn't get you on the SoCon All Frosh Team.

So long Rodney Allison, you will not be missed on Saturdays.xmadx

Yeah I guess you need to be higher than third on your team in tackles and second among freshman in your conference.

Wofford got kind of snubbed in many areas.
