View Full Version : You'd never tell - but Oregon could make the Rose Bowl

That's right. If USC makes into the title game and the Ducks beat the Beavers this weekend, UO is headed to Pasadena. Funny though you would never know on any of the sports networks or even here in Eugene - it's like people already don't care.
I don't see us pulling the upset this weekend. But I can't imagine the surprise from everyone if Oregon ends up in a BCS game.

Its like saying you only need the seven of diamonds to win the hand at the World Series of Poker. It could happen, but let's get serious. In order to do that, become the biggest Missouri fan on the planet. The Tigers are your best friend, provided you win in Corvallis this weekend.
How much you want to bet on it (be careful, its a sucker bet)? Might be better odds on SC State or Texas State winning the FCS championship.
Ducks win---most likely Holiday Bowl. Lose, most likely Emerald Bowl.
Beavs win---Most likely Rose Bowl. Lose, most likely Sun Bowl.

Actually, Ducks might be in a better position if UCLA beats USC, provided the Ducks win this weekend. Three way tie at the top might give the edge to the Ducks.

Or UF losses to FSU. Bama losses to UF. OU losses to OSU. Texas and USC win out. xwhistlex
Not going to happen though. But I would love to see FSU pull the upset.

But I can't imagine the surprise from everyone if Oregon ends up in a BCS game.
In the unlikely event that USC goes to the title game (which would require quite an alignment of the planets), Boise State (as the 2nd non-BCS conference team) would get into a BCS game ahead of Oregon. The Ducks are not playing in the Rose Bowl.

Doesn't matter, the Beavs won't lose this week. They are a team on a mission and even though I usually root for Oregon in this game, I would smile if OSU went back to the Rose Bowl just knowing how low that program was at one point in time(Before Erickson).

I think the Ducks would be the Pac-10 representative in the BCS, but I'm not sure how that works...

If Oregon beats Oregon State, USC wins the Pac-10 by beating UCLA on December 6. USC would be the BCS representative in that case. There is no guarantee that the 2nd place team goes to the BCS when the champion goes to the BCS championship game.

OhioHen is right. Sorry, but I'll have to refer you to the rule book on this one:
BCS Selection Procedures (http://www.bcsfootball.org/bcsfb/eligibility)
In the latest BCS rankings, Oregon is #23. The Rose Bowl cannot simply take them if they're the #2 Pac-10 team. They have to qualify for a BCS bid as an at-large team:
If there are fewer than 10 automatic qualifiers, then the bowls will select at-large participants to fill the remaining berths. An at-large team is any Football Bowl Subdivision team that is bowl-eligible and meets the following requirements:
A. Has won at least nine regular-season games, and
B. Is among the top 14 teams in the final BCS Standings.
Illinois got tabbed for the Rose Bowl last year because they were #14. If they had been #15, the Rose Bowl committee could not have selected them.
It is damn near impossible for Oregon to climb the 9 spots necessary to get a Rose Bowl invite. If Oregon St. loses, and USC qualifies for the championship game, the Rose Bowl will most-likely take an At-Large team with a pedigree like Texas, Alabama, Oklahoma, etc... I'm basing that guess on whom they've invited in recent years when a Big-10/Pac-10 matchup wasn't possible.

Gotcha. Wasn't sure about the rule. In that case I guess the BCS bowl would get to pick who.

Well damn OhioHen looks like you've won this round. I figured since we would be the Pac 10 #2 we would have a spot in which is not the case unless we are in the Top 14.
For the record, this is not the year I want the Ducks in the Rose Bowl :o
But I don't want those savages from Corvallis in either.

This is their best shot in quite some time. It'll only get better from this point on.

Anyone have the order of picking this year if USC goes to the title game? Would it be Fiesta then Rose or vice versa? If it's Rose, then would they keep the west matchup and go with Utah or the second Big 12? Then the Fiesta and Sugar bowl order would come into play.
Interesting stuff.

The Rose Bowl is only obligated to take the Pac-10 champ if that team does not otherwise qualify for the BCS. The only scenario for this to occur is if Oregon State is the champ (OSU owns the tiebreaker over USC). If USC is the Pac-10 champ, the Rose Bowl does not have to take the Pac-10 runnerup (although they could if they want to).
I believe the criteria is the same in regards to the Big 10 champ going to the Rose Bowl. Penn State will not otherwise qualify for the BCS so they are going to the Rose Bowl.
This was done at the insistance of the Rose Bowl committee, who still wanted a chance to maintain their traditional Pac-10/Big 10 matchup.
If USC loses to Notre Dame, they could still play in the Rose Bowl if Oregon State loses to Oregon. If they lose to UCLA, that would still put the Beavs in the Rose Bowl.
