The Gridiron Power Index (GPI), the index ranking for the NCAA Division I FCS and a top indicator of at-large playoff selection finishes the regular season with James Madison in the top spot this week. The Dukes lead the 2008 regular season GPI from start to finish. No other team has been ranked No. 1 this year in the GPI.

The Colonial Athletic Association, the largest league in the FCS has seven teams in the top 25; the Southern Conference has five; the Big Sky Conferences has four; the Missouri Valley Football and the Southland Conference have two each; and the Big South, Great West Football, Mid-Eastern Athletic Conferences plus the Ivy and Patriot Leagues have one each. (Games through 11/22)

The Final 2008 GPI will be released once all the college football games have been played, in January 2009.

The GPI as a playoff at-large selection indicator.

This year a modified GPI was used by the Division I Football Championship selection committee. How well did it indicate at-large team selection?

The committee chose these eight teams:
Villanova
Richmond
Montana
New Hampshire
Wofford
Cal Poly
Northern Iowa
Maine

This is what the modified GPI indicated:
2. Villanova (2.60)
4. Richmond (4.00)
5. Montana (4.80)
6. New Hampshire (6.60)
7. Wofford (6.80)
8. Cal Poly (8.20)
10. William & Mary (10.60)
11. Northern Iowa (11.00)

The committee selected: 12. Maine (12.00) over 10. William & Mary (10.60).

The regular GPI indicated:
3. Montana (4.50)
4. Villanova (4.63)
5. Richmond (4.75)
6. Cal Poly (5.25)
7. Wofford (7.75)
8. Northern Iowa (8.13)
9. New Hampshire (8.25)
12. William & Mary (13.00)

Again the committee selected: 14. Maine (15.00) over 12. William & Mary (13.00).

So in both cases the two versions of the GPI indicated all but one at-large selection.

As did likely 99.9% of the voters on this message board. Great that we can use all that computing power to come up with virtually what everyone would've come up with had we never undertaken the exercise to begin with. xlolx

As did likely 99.9%...You're in that 1%. xlolx AGAIN! xnodx And again no major poll or even the mod GPI (all computers) did better than the GPI. xthumbsupx

Uh, I tied the GPI this year after beating the GPI the past two years. of course, I was probably in a "lesser" division seeing how I'm human and the GPI is a thrown together spreadsheet so I'm not sure my superiority over the GPI is going to be acknowledged. :p

My concurrence here:

Agreed with 89Hen on the playoff field (believe my post is #106) and was incorrect with Liberty being in the field rather than Maine. You are correct, forgetfulness is a human trait - thank you for the example. xthumbsupx

How is UNI a seed considering they were the second worst GPI of the at-large teams and lost to a team in the GPI in front of them? Very confusing..

Oh, maybe not everything is based on the GPI, son.

Edited for accuracy. xnodx

Also edited to try to get around that the fact that the GPI, in its best years, can only hope to equal most of the people on this board, and in many years is a poor, less accurate substitute. But I'm sure you can edit this post too to make it say whatever you want in order to preserve the illusion that is the GPI and its status as a "top predictor" of the playoff field. Edit away!!! xlolx xlolx
