Men's Soccer to Take on Clemson in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament

CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina’s men’s soccer team (11-8, 5-2 Big South Conference), a day after winning the Big South Conference Tournament, will travel to Clemson, S.C., to take on 27th-ranked Clemson University (11-5-3, 2-4-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. at Riggs Field in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament, the selection committee announced this evening, Nov. 14.

Coastal, as a number three seed, won all three of its games this past week in the Big South’s Conference Tournament, defeating sixth-seeded High Point, seventh-seeded VMI and fifth-seeded Winthrop, to capture the Big South Conference’s automatic bid. This is CCU’s fifth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Two years ago, the Chanticleers advanced all the way to the round of 16.

Clemson received an at-large bid after falling to North Carolina, 2-0, in the ACC Semifinals. Clemson has been ranked in the top 25 for the majority of the season, peaking at number 12 on Sept. 12th.

The Friday match-up will be the eighth ever meeting between the two schools. The Chants defeated the Tigers 2-1 in overtime in 2003 the last time these two teams met. These two have locked up once before in the NCAA Tournament as Clemson prevailled 5-4 in penalty kicks after a 1-1 tie in 2002.

The winner of the Coastal Carolina-Clemson matchup will face 14th-seeded North Carolina State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
