BOSTON -- Just call him Mr. November. Or better yet, refer to Dustin Pedroia as the Most Valuable Player of the American League.

The second baseman of the Boston Red Sox continued his rapid burst into the national spotlight on Tuesday, when he was recognized with that impressive honor.

Though most pundits expected the race for MVP to be agonizingly close, Pedroia won in comfortable fashion, outdistancing a solid field that included, among others, Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis, Twins first baseman Justin Morneau, Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton and Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez.

Pedroia got 16 of the 28 first-place votes and easily beat out Minnesota slugger Justin Morneau.

Pedroia joins Cal Ripken Jr. and Ryan Howard as the only players to win Rookie of the Year and MVP in consecutive years.

How can someone not think Pedroia was in the top 10? Same can be said about Mauer.

No, but you should start making all your potential 2009 banners now so you'll again be covered for any eventuality in a year.

Too bad CQ got hurt. He would have won otherwise.

yes, but Quentin has no one to blame but himself.

Quentin was injured Monday night in Cleveland. After fouling off a pitch while batting against Cliff Lee, Quentin hit his right hand on the bat as he was holding it with his left.

not sure how much of a shock that would be. The Phillies are a very good team.

I would say were a very good team in 2008 and have a lot of guys asking for a lot of money in the offseason.

We do not have Yankee/Red Sox type payroll ability, so we'll see how the '09 roster shakes out. Burrell is almost certainly gone.

So Dustin Pedroia has won ROY, Gold Glove, Silver Slugger, and MVP. That must make him one of the best players in history :D. I mean for a second year player to win those 4 awards is amazing.

Once upon a time another Red Sox player won MVP, ROY and Gold Glove in the same year, Fred Lynn, one of the gold dust twins, Jim Rice being the other.

Now there's a name I remember. My first glove in Little League (approx 1979) was a Fred Lynn signature Wilson!

And if he hadn't taken that ball to the head, he'd have been a HoF player...IMHO...

Considering his VORP, this was actually a pretty good choice. Pedroia had the third-best VORP in the AL behind A-Rod (1st) and Grady Sizemore. Pedroia doesn't have an overwhelming OBP or SLG but he managed to have a very good OPS for any position player, much less a second baseman, at .869. I thought Youkilis deserved it more with a .958 OPS and 53.4 VORP but Pedroia isn't undeserving at all. Considering recent bad choices like Jimmy Rollins for the NL last year and Justin Morneau in the AL in 2006, this was a good decision.
