I made a silly comment that I deleted. These teams actually have pretty good records this year, 8-2 and 8-3. Who's the favorite?

I honestly don't know...both teams are coming in with alot of momentum. If FAMU's defense can continue to play togh against the run and click on all cylinders on offense, then FAMU should win. BCU is just as talented though. It's going to be a tough one for both teams.

The game will also be broadcast live on ESPN Classic at 2pm

FAMU coach stresses discipline vs. Bethune-Cookman offense

After two consecutive dominating performances that shut down its opponents running game, coach Joe Taylor had one word for FAMU's defense: Discipline.

The Rattlers play their final game of the season Saturday against Bethune-Cookman University in the Florida Classic. But if it wants to make an argument for second-place in the MEAC, which the Wildcats currently occupy, FAMU will have to contain a pesky option offense.

Since head coach Alvin Wyatt and offensive coordinator Brad Bernard launched what's known as the "Wyatt Bone" 10 years ago, teams in the conference have found it troublesome. The "Wyatt Bone" emphasizes a baffling triple option that until this season made Bethune-Cookman the top scoring team in the league.

"It's just a matter of gap cancellation," Taylor said. "When you go against the Wyatt Bone or the triple option, you really have to play assignment football. You have to assign somebody to the quarterback, somebody to the fullback and they can never, never, never try to do anything else but what their assignment calls for."

Taylor is one of the few coaches who have had more successes than failures against it.

It amazes me how these "Classics" between HBCs on neutral sites draw such amazing numbers while the week-to-week home attendance is so much lower. What is the reason for this difference? I admittedly don't know much about HBC football tradition.

Sometimes our students aren't counted in attendance...so we could have 20,000 fans in the stadium but attendance will be listed at 13,000 or 14,000.

It also helps when you have a "Classic" that pits two rivals...in-state rivals at that...FAMU/BCU, SU/GSU, and AAMU/ASU come to mind. It's also like a BIG family reunion as well.

Taylor thrust into rivalry with B-CU

The person who jumped to ask coach Joe Taylor how long it would take for him to win a MEAC title as FAMU's new coach wasn't even a member of the press.

Later on, another person, bellowing from the back of the room reminded Taylor how important it is to beat Bethune-Cookman. Taylor was just being introduced as FAMU's new head coach in late December.

As the season has unfolded, FAMU fans who want a conference title will have to wait now that South Carolina State has clinched the championship. But this weekend Taylor gets his chance to grant them their wish for a win over the Wildcats.

As Taylor goes into his first Florida Classic as FAMU's head coach, there is a little more than state bragging rights at stake. FAMU could help its cause in the race for second place in the MEAC with a win.

That alone raises the expectations for a victory Saturday at the Citrus Bowl.

FAMU WRs set for big challenge
By St. Clair Murraine
DEMOCRAT STAFF WRITER

While the triple-option offense that FAMU will face against Bethune-Cookman University is grabbing the headlines, there is still the question of who will win the battle in the secondary.

Even with the Wildcats going into the game with the second-most effective defense in the league against the pass, FAMU's receivers don't think it's a matchup they can lose. The statistics bare that out, but not by much in the Rattlers favor.

"They don't let you get too many big plays on them, so we just have to stay calm and play the game," said redshirt sophomore receiver Adrian Smith.

"They're a very talented secondary," he said. "They are very disciplined, but it's just up to our coaches to put us in the right places, which they have been doing all year. I think it's going to be a real challenge for us and all of the receivers are ready to face that challenge."

DO NOT remind me of that game. I remember the Wildcat fans had left the stadium because it looked as if FAMU would walk away with an easy victory...NOT SO FAST my friend...the stadium began to fill back up as BCC stormed back late in the 4th quarter and were left in silence as BCC scored the winning TD...I remember we stood there in shock for about 10 minutes watching the Wildcat fans cheer...That's when fans began jumping off the Billy Joe bandwagon. As a matter of fact, he was fired at the end of that season.

That was our 3rd loss in row to the Wildcats, and that had NEVER been done in the series.

That was the year of your failed FBS/I-A attempt wasn't it? That QB you had that year looked pretty good, what happened to him?
