First hockey game I've been to this year, I was glad we got out with a tie, considering Harvard must have been on our end for 80-90% of the time over the 3rd period and overtime.
With 13 seconds left in the 3rd, a Brown player and a Harvard player ran into a glass panel and shattered it, looked pretty cool.

Sounds like things haven't changed much!:p
I remember a Harvard-Brown game when the gang in Section 18 (right behind the opposing goalie for 2 periods out of 3) rode the Brown goalie particularly hard -- especially when he let in a soft goal with one second left in the first period. The kid was so frustrated that he raced back to the glass and started raking his stick over the top, trying to decapitate his tormentors (including me). But he was only about 5-8, so he didn't do much damage!

That's exactly what's holding it back. With the current money problems at URI I'm just hoping football survives.
As for hockey, if we ever can go the varisty route, I have no doubt we could jump right into Hockey East and be competetive in a few short years. I'd love to see us have a hockey rivalry with Brown that matches our rivalry in football. A hockey rivalry with PC that matches our basketball rivalry with them would be even better.

Denver handed AF its first loss, 4-1 on Saturday night.
Up until beating Colorado College, it was hard to tell if AF was for real or not. 10 of their 13 wins came against very weak Atlantic Hockey teams and two wins were against a mediocre Bemidji State team. AF should roll though its Atlantic Hockey schedule with ease, but it'll be interesting to see how they'll fare against tougher OOC opponents like Yale, Merrimack and Quinnipiac.

Quinnipiac lost to Union College 4-2 last night snapping the Bobcats seven game unbeaten streak (6-0-1). A win over the Dutchmen would have placed Quinnipiac in a first place tie with Princeton in the ECAC Hockey standings (Princeton was upset by Rensselaer yesterday afternoon). Instead Quinnipiac sits in a second place tie with Cornell and Dartmouth.

What's happened to Harvard? After a 4-3 start, the Crimson are winless in their last 12 games (0-9-3). This is a team that was one win away from an NCAA Tournament berth just last year.
Yale (11-4-0, 6-2-0 ECAC) is off to a fantastic start and should be ranked when the polls come out tomorrow. Yale is coming off a pair of road victories at #15 Dartmouth and at Harvard (which by the way is the just the 4th Eli win at Harvard's Bright Center in 29 years). Yale and Quinnipiac play each other at the end of the month at Ingalls, which should be a fun game to watch.

Limbert OT Goal Caps Stunning Comeback
Yale Beats Colgate 5-4
Jan. 24, 2009
HAMILTON, NY - The Yale men's hockey team, trailing by four goals with just over 12 minutes left in the game, scored five straight and stunned Colgate 5-4 in overtime before 1,150 at Starr Rink in ECAC Hockey play.
Kevin Limbert's goal one minute into the OT ended the game. Yale junior defenseman Tom Dignard had two goals and one assist while Broc Little and Sean Backman also hit the net.
The Bulldogs (13-5-1, 8-3-1) pulled out a weekend road sweep and one of the most improbable comebacks ever by outshooting the Raiders (6-13-5, 1-7-3) 46-16, including 19-5 in the third period. Blanking Colgate on six power-play attempts, while not allowing one shot on net over the nearly 12 minutes of man-advantages, also contributed to the stunning result.

Colgate gets a goal in the last minute from Frosh Austin Smith to tie Union 2-2 at home. Decent game, good comeback effort from the Raiders. A 1-0 game got interesting with about 6 minutes to go in the 3rd, but no one could win it in OT. This was a school record 13th OT game for Colgate this year

The ECAC Regular Season title comes down to the final weekend. Yale could've wrapped it up with a win at Princeton last night. Instead the Elis have a two point lead with 2 games left. Cornell (3 points back) plays at Yale on Friday. A Big Red victory, coupled with a Princeton win at Dartmouth, will make things very interesting going into the final Saturday/Sunday of the regular season.

If the standings remain the same after next weekend, Colgate travels to Quinnipiac for the first round. Do you think the Red Raiders have what it takes to beat Quinnipiac four times in a single season?
Colgate will finish either in 10th or 11th place, which means they can't host a playoff series. Thanks to that horrible loss to Brown last night, Quinnipiac can finish anywhere between 4th and 9th. Finishing 9th would mean we'd be on the road for the entire playoffs.

I'd only want one of those two knowing that we can and have played well both at the Bank and Cheel this season and recently. I'm not sure we could beat Union this year, Dartmouth would be a very iffy, probably my #3 choice, Harvard's Bright is tough for us, and I want no part of going to SLU

That's what we're trying to figure out ourselves. Some people feel the novelty of the new arena has worn off (especially among students) and others feel that because the team isn't winning fans have stopped coming. I think it's a combination of both.
Quinnipiac is not only in danger of not winning 20 games for the first time in 5 years, but we're also in danger of finishing below .500 for the first time in 13 years. The fan base is spoiled. There's also a lot of fairweather fans that all of a sudden jumped on the Yale bandwagon this winter. 2-3 years ago Quinnipiac was the place to be....now it's Yale.
The Bank was rockin' on Friday night against the Elis. Over 4,600 packed the arena for a game that was televised live on WCTX. It was really sad to see the lack of enthusiasm the next night against Brown. I saw more enthusiasm and excitement from the Brown and Quinnipiac pep bands than I did the rest of the 1,700 fans in the stands.

Princeton and Cornell have also clinched spots in the Top 4, earning 1st Round byes
St. Lawrence and Dartmouth each have a shot at the 4th bye. Dartmouth currently owns the tiebreaker between the two
If both SLU and DC lose and Harvard wins on Saturday, Harvard would steal the 4th spot. Currently, the Crimson are guaranteed a home series in the 1st Round
Clarkson, Quinnipiac and Union are fighting for a home spot, but only 2 can get it. Union would need to beat Clarkson on Saturday, and then would hold the tiebreaker between the 2. Quinnipiac holds the 3-way tiebreaker, plus a sweep of Clarkson

At one time the ECAC Regular Season Champ did get an automatic bid into the NCAAs. That's how Yale got into the Tournament in 1998.
For Yale not to get into the NCAAs they'd have to have a poor showing against one of the low seeds in Quarterfinals. I don't see that happening. If Yale makes Albany, they're as good as in....and they'll be automatically placed in the East Regional at Crackport.

The Brown-Harvard game last night was awesome!!! Also comes on the same night we beat Harvard in basketball on a buzzer-beater 3-pointer.
First shutout of the season for Brown puts us one win away from pulling off a huge upset.
Only 1079 in attendance, what happened?
Harvard doesn't draw for the playoffs. Last season I went up to Cambridge for the Quinnipiac series in the Quarterfinals and there were just as many QU fans as Harvard fans in attendance.
Maybe if they were playing Cornell or even Yale things might be different.
Congratulations on both wins. It's been a tough winter for Brown sports.

Colgate lives another day! The Raiders trailed 4-2 with 3 minutes left. Then the magic happened. Senior Captain Nick St. Pierre scored with less than 2:30 to go. With 19 seconds left, freshman Austin Smith knocked in the tying goal, then capped off his first career hattrick early in the OT (our 18th such game of the season!) to win!
Colgate is now 12-17-7 on the year, with their series tied 1-1
Next up, Game 3, winner-take-all at Quinnipiac tomorrow night

It happened again. Colgate battled back at Quinnipiac to tie the game in the 3rd. For the 19th time this season, 7th straight game, and 3rd game of the series, the teams needed OT. This time, it was Brandon Wong again (came back from injury for the series, 2 OT winners, he was the X-factor), with a 4-3 final, Colgate's season is over :(

Are the Mavs commonly referred to as "Minnesota State" now? That seems strange since they are no more Minnesota State than MSU - St. Cloud or MSU Moorhead. My wife graduated from Moorhead State and we still have a hard time calling it MSUM.

For the fourth time in 42 years of league post-season play, the Bulldogs have made the conference semifinals. The No. 7 ranked Yale men's hockey team (22-7-2), ECAC Hockey's regular season champion, is focused on winning its first conference tournament title and grabbing an automatic bid to the 2009 NCAA field. The Elis, who advanced after sweeping Brown at home last week, take on No. 14 St. Lawrence (21-11-4) in Friday's 4 p.m. semifinal at Albany's Times Union Center. The game airs live on the NHL Network (DirecTV 215, Dish Network 403) and can also be seen on B2 Networks, while the WYBC radio broadcast can be heard locally on AM-1340 and online at wybc.com

ALBANY, N.Y. - Yale players have been asked to reflect on the stunning comeback at Colgate almost every time a sports writer inquires about the 2008-09 season. The Jan. 24 game where the Bulldogs scored five straight times over the last 12 minutes to win 5-4 became a distant memory tonight. The No. 7 ranked Elis, trailing by a goal with less than two minutes to play in the first ECAC Hockey semifinal at the Times Union Center in Albany, tallied twice in 22 seconds to beat No. 14 St. Lawrence 4-3.
Matt Nelson's goal with 66 seconds left capped the amazing comeback and sent Yale (23-7-2) to its first-ever conference tournament championship game against the winner of the Princeton-Cornell game. The Bulldogs' first semifinal victory in four tries also tied the school record for wins in a season.

Although many of the brain cells I was using back in the 70's have been killed by now. Perhaps they were the ones that held the memories of the Yale games.

Yale has been a member of the ECAC Hockey League since the league was founded in 1962. Not only was this Yale's first ever ECAC Championship, but it was also their first ever appearance in the championship game.

Thanks, but I would've preferred if it was Quinnipiac that won it. :)
