The Big East isnt picking up any new teams soon. They dont want anymore football only playing members. Maybe when the basketball only school break off it will happen but not now.

Georgetown is not looking to go elsewhere. Its unusual mix of programs (full scholarship teams, partial schoalrship teams, PL football, and some programs without any aid) does not fit any other conference out there.

Jim Calhoun has already hinted publically that the conference will split, but Mike Tranghese has flat out denied it. But this 16 team super bball conference is just unsustainable. Eventually the football schools will go one way and the Catholic schools will go the other.

If and when the Big East splits off and the football schools take the Big East name, then I expect the idiot Mike Tranghese to throw a hail mary and try to lure Penn State and Notre Dame. Notre Dame is already in the BE for their olympic sports. I just don't see that happening unless Mike Tranghese can guarantee ND, it's exclusive TV deal and 12 Million a year.

I also expect that the BE will add Memphis, ECU and maybe UCF. Marshall has pretty much peaked and the basketball program won't measure so no to them, and I don't see Northern Illinois happening.

I have a feeling that the BE won't split because in the SU won't want to give up playing G-Town, Providence etc.

Big 10 expansion to 12 teams also figures into this....

Possible candidates

Notre Dame
Iowa State
Mizzou
Texas-Would require an ammendment to the Big 10 Constitution

Outside Chance:
Pitt
Syracuse
WVU

Very Outside/almost impossible chance

Rutgers-This is a Piscataway fantasy won't bring in enough money
UConn-Stadium is too small even if the team makes tons of money. State does not border a state with Big 10 school in it.

ND wants to stay independent, joining the Big East as a full time member would only split the pie that they get now from their football deal, I don't see them joining any conference

I agree. If ND does join a conference for football it will be the Big 10. Fat chance that PSU will leave as well. This is just something that Calhoun mentioned on Mike and the Mad dog.

Texas would NEVER go to Big Ten. SEC is the only real option outside of Big XII based on travel and rivalries. If Texas went SEC, they'd atleast have Arkansas and LSU. Big Ten, they'd have no one.

Big XII works out nicely because it gives them conference games against rivals Oklahoma and Tex A&M. If Texas went Big Ten, it'd hurt the rivalries, namely A&M..

The only reason I put Texas down was that it has been mentioned so many times in conference realignment articles that I have read. I don't see it happening either. Also I would add Nebraska to the list of possibles, they have been mentioned as well.

If there is a BCS conference that is vulnerable to an ACC-style corporate raid it's the Big 12. Fortunately, the Big 10 doesn't seem hell bent on having a conference championship game.

Would Nebraska really give up the rivalry games against Mizzou and Kansas? Heck, Nebraska has a solid history with Oklahoma too. Never heard them mentioned in those talks...

Big XII is not that vulnerable based on location. Too far west for the ACC and Big East. Possible for SEC, but SEC would need to take two and do they really get two from Big XII? Big Ten has come up, but outside of Iowa St, there really isn't much there. PAC-10 has been rumored for Colorado, but the Pac-10 would want one more, wouldn't they? I guess they could get Colorado St or Fresno St, but would they want to split the pie that much?

It's still interesting to talk about. I have seen Nebraska mentioned several times. I'm not going to spend half an hour searching google to find it though. If the Big 10 managed to poach a team from the Big 12, I think there might be some interesting second order effects. Maybe the Big 12 would try to lure Arkansas away. Or maybe the Big 12 would add Colorado State. I don't know much about Iowa State, but maybe they might prefer to be in the Big 10?

Doesn't Nebraska have a rivalry with Colorado?

Go have fun on this web site:

Lots of conference realignment talk. Talks of Texas and A&M to SEC. Mizzou to Big Ten and Colorado to Pac 10.
