According to GM Brian Cashman, Swisher is penciled in to be the Opening Day First Baseman

I doubt this takes the Yanks out of the Tex sweepstakes. If they signed him they can either flip Swisher to a loser like the Angels or move him to the OF.

While I do think there is an insurance element to this, I have to wonder what would be the point of persuing Tex now. Yes, he's a very good 1B, but now you have a good defense, power-hitting 1B on your roster locked up for 3 years at significantly less money

I doubt you see Swisher in the OF. The Yankees already have Damon, Cabrera, Gardner, Nady and Matsui all under contract for next year, plus Abreu still isn't officially gone (though I doubt he stays at this point), and the talented Austin Jackson waiting in the minors. He'll likely be an emergency corner-OF, but otherwise NY is set there. 1B was one of the priorities over the winter, and this is a nice fill-in

While the Yankees aren't hurting for cash, they're already preparing to throw a ton of $$$ at Sabathia, and probably don't want to do the same to Teixiera if they have another option available. I'll never say never, but this, to me, makes adding Tex extremely unlikely

They could still sign, CC, Derek Lowe, Ben Sheets and Tex and still have a boatload left.

BTW the newest rumor is they want to sign Varitek incase Posada isnt ready xmadx

Of course they have money available, they're the Yankees. But I still can't see them going after Tex now. Swisher is the Yankees new first baseman.
