Just started, Maine got the kickoff and went 3 & out. UMass ball.

Very long injury timeout for UMass OL Ben Coblyn. Apparently a leg injury, doesn't look like he'll be back.

I cannot believe Ben Colbyn is actually walking/carried off that field. The injury looked gruesome. He could have easily been paralyzed/suffered a massive lower back or leg injury.
Whew.

End of 1st quarter, no score. Maine ball in UMass territory.
Jackman
November 8th, 2008, 12:44 PM
UMass starts the 2nd quarter by calling timeout. Maine has been using that "slow hurry" offense that everyone has been using against us lately, because we're so slow getting our defense in.

November 8th, 2008, 12:45 PM
This time Maine goes for it on 4th & 1 and makes it.

Not taking away ANYTHING from Maine (they have been in my Top 25 for three weeks now), but UMASS MIGHT HAVE THE WORST RUN DEFENSE of all the Top 25 teams.
I have seen them so many games this year...twice live...and it is the same thing every game.
Maine is just knifing through that first tier of players like a spoon through hot butter.

I hope Maine wins out too, because then Richmond will make the playoffs even with a loss to W&M. No way can Maine go ahead of us, but I would be happy to take them with us.

That will be played OVER and OVER by both teams; he de-cleated the linebacker.

so u think UNH has no chance against Maine?
I think it will depend on how they do against Villanova and UMass.Losses in those games will have a negative affect on the outcome of that game IMO.Maine has taken it on the chin recently against UNH,and they will be looking for payback, and they are just a physical team that can play defense.I was just thinking that they are the type of team that could give the Wildcats fits, especially in Orono. If it's for a playoff spot it will be a hell of a game.
UMass just scored so this one is still anyone's game.I love the CAA!

Easy to say here, but I don't doubt a jerk like you would have the sack to say it to him in person. Why don't you send him and Coach Brown a personal letter making such a statement so they know what kind of fan and man you are not!!
Why don't you write another letter to Coen, his four interceptions were pretty damaging today don't you think?
You blew it to by showing how small a person you really are by your comment and weak defense!
You cannot care much about the team when you make that type of comment!!
As to crawling back into a hole, that would be a good place for you after your display.

Nice job & win for Maine. Tough loss for UMass. We've been sporatic on all sides of the ball this year. Even if we somehow, someway make the playoffs this year @ 8-4, we just don't have the horses this year. I don't think we would get past the first round unless we got sent to play the MEAC champ.
Well, UNH needs to beat Villanova, and we need to beat UNH and Hofstra.
Any faint chance of hope will close if UNH loses to 'nova.
Congrats to Maine. The missed extra point hurt, but Maine played better today overall and looked like the overall better team this year.
Maine needs to win out, but they could be playing the patriot league champ in the first round, or be sent to Appalachianxeekx . Good luck either way.

Tough luck, as I think UMass is a playoff caliber team. But only 7 Div I wins (isn't Bryant a non counter?) won't get UMass in. CAA now is definitely not getting 5 teams in.

Yeah, don't see 5 CAA teams getting in. Four at most. JMU, Nova, either W&M/Richmond and the North winner (UNH or Maine).
That opens up a spot for Furman possibly as the 4th SoCon team or another team from the MVC.

The way I understand it, Bryant counts as DI for scheduling purposes, but not as part of the playoff at large spot selection criteria.

Agreed. A missed XP is always frustrating, but I'm not going to get too worked up about it. It's not like it happened with only a minute to go; it happened with 11:30 still left. The offense had its chances after that and didn't get it done. (And if you'd told me at halftime, the way things were looking then, that UMass could be within a point with 11 minutes to go, I gladly would have taken it.)
Maine is simply the better team. This was not a flukey win handed to them by a missed XP (which obviously only would have tied the game anyway). They beat up UMass physically and earned the victory.

Jeez--I forgot the xsmiley_wix on that post. It was meant as a little humor after the way Maine physically spanked UMass today.
Brown's quote after the game about it was interesting:
Why did the kick fail? I'm not totally positive, it hit the upright. We don't know if he just missed it or not, but obviously, there was some question whether or not he was ready for it.

Maine is simply the better team.
Thanks for the kind words -- to you and the rest of the UMass community -- but I can't say that I agree. As happy as I am with this victory, I saw glimpses of speed and talent that Maine doesn't have.
Every time the UMass offense took the field, especially late in the game, I got nervous. It's not that I have no faith in The Black Hole; I just kept muttering "These guys (UMass) are DANGEROUS." The last UMass TD was a beautiful play, executed by strategy and speed. I feared another big play like that was coming. Good thing the Black Hole regrouped and prevented that.
Sure, Maine has a running game like I've never seen. I just think that UMass has more balance. While UMass may be the better team, I think Maine simply played a smarter game, using its ground attack to work the clock, keep the ball (40 minutes to 20!), and keep the Maine D well rested. Maine won because it controlled, not dominated.
By the way, I was in Amherst two years ago for the 10-9 game. (I didn't make it today.) I'm glad that some of you UMass fans are taking the high road and not blaming your kicker for this loss. (A number of Maine fans did that in '06.) Your team had other opportunities to create points, and didn't, just like my team did two years ago. I'm glad you recognize that.
Thanks for the well wishes. I'm not sure what to think about your game with UNH, but I sure know I'm looking forward to ours! (Can't look past URI, though, regardless of what UMass did to the Rams.)
