First time poster, so forgive me if this has been posted in the past. I was wondering what people's thoughts were on who they think is the best of the best the last 10 years. Or what is your top ten of the last 10 years? Mine...
1. App. State
2. Montana
3. Georgia Southern
4. Youngstown St.
5. James Madison
6. UNI
7. New Hampshire
8. Southern Illinois
9. Delaware
10. UMass
I might be a bit biased and I know there are probably more "educated" picks than mine, so please do share.

That looks like a good list but I'd switch GSU and Montana. GSU played in 3 title games and won 2 titles in the last 10 years so I think they get the nod for #2. App definitely takes first for the 3 straight titles.
Both App and GSU had long home win streaks during this time as well.

Sucks to say it, but Delaware should be higher as well considering they have a National Championship. Also, I dont necessarily think that Youngstown should be ahead of UNI, given the fact that UNI has dominated them in that time period.

I think your list looks pretty good...maybe I would put Delaware up one spot. Montana at #2 is right I think. We've won 1 and played in a few NC's in the past 10 years. Not to mention made the playoffs for 15 years in a row. 142 straight weeks being ranked in the top 25 of FSC rankings too.

Although McNeese has struggled ever since Katrina, I think they should be considered for the list. Maybe even in place of SIU because they have a longer history in the playoffs.

Looks good as far as the top 3 go. App is obviously #1 with three national titles. I think Montana is #2 because I beleive they have the most wins in FCS over that time period. Not sure about other schools but Montana has 108 wins and a .80 winning percentage(108/135). If you count this year as part of the ten than Montana still has 108 wins(and counting) and a .818 winning percentage(108/132).

Well if you wana talk like that about Delaware then UMass should be higher as they have been to 2 NC games winning 1 within the 10 years.

This looks good, originally I was going to say change Montana and GSU, but after thinking about the entire body of work Montana has accomplished over the decade, they rightfully deserve the number 2 spot.

I dont think a championship should automatically put you in the top ten. I think that consistency is really important too.

One day I was bored and did the winning percentages for all DI teams since 1993.
We had a slight edge over Ohio State and Dayton for number one at about 81% :p

Delaware has the only skunk I can think of in championship history so that gets kudos in my book.....Chattanooga gets honorable mention since they have hosted since 97.
and I decided to go with Montana over GSU. I used conference championships as my tiebreaker

You guys are being WAY nice to EVS. This list is very questionable once you get past the top 3 if you are talking about the last ten years.
YSU at four??? I'm not sure they should be in the top 10 at all. They are 5-3 in the playoffs and three of those wins were 9 years ago.
No way can you have YSU, UNH or SIU in front of Delaware or UMass and to not have Furman at all? xeyebrowx xsmhx

What has UNH done to be mentioned in the top 10??
I'm still curious about this point..? And IF they're in the top 10, there's no way they're above UMass or UD.
In the last 10 years, UNH has one conference championship (co-champs with Richmond in 2005) and has been to the playoffs 4 times (2004-2007) losing in the first round last year, and in the quarter finals the other 3 years making them 3-4 in the playoffs.
UMass has gone 5 times (1998, 1999, 2003, 2006, 2007), including a national championship (1998) and a national runner-up (2006 - which included a win @ Montana and 2 wins over UNH that year). Add in 2 quarterfinal losses and a 1st round loss, and UMass is 9-5 in that same time span. Also, 3 conference co-championships and 1 outright championship.
UD is 10-3 in their 4 playoff appearances (2000, 2003, 2004, 2007) including the 2003 skunk win in Chattanooga and runner up last year. They've also made the quarters and the semis once each in that run, with 3 conference co-championships (2000, 2003, and 2004) to top it off.
I give UD the edge over UMass thanks to playoff performance but UMass has more appearances and conference championships keeping them close behind. UNH can't touch either of those. The only thing they've really got going is consistently knocking off mediocre BCS opponents.
JMU, by the way, has 2 conference championships (1999, 2004) in that time and is 4-3 (2004 National Champions) in their 4 playoff appearances in that time. [Just realized: JMU has only made it out of the first round once since joining the CAA, and that was the year they won.]

I agree with this post. UNH has been one of the best programs in FCS over the last five seasons, but their seasons before that weren't anything to right home about. Until they have significant playoff success (make it to the semifinals, for example) they should not be ahead of teams that have shown an ability to both make the playoffs and win in the playoffs. While UNH could easily have beaten Northern Iowa twice and UMass once in the playoffs, it didn't happen, and thus, we should behind both of those teams, at least.

If you are going to include SIU, then you absolutely have to include WIU.
1998 - 11-3 record, Gateway Champs, Lost in semi-finals
1999 - 7-4
2000 - 9-3, Gateway Champs, Lost in First Round
2001 - 5-5
2002 - 11-2 Gateway Champs, Lost in Quarters
2003 - 9-4, Lost in Quarters
2004 - 4-7
2005 - 5-6
2006 - 5-6
2007 - 6-5
I would love to see what SIU has done over the past ten years, if you went off last 5 then I agree, SIU would be ahead of WIU.
I would be willing to bet that SIU's records from 1998-2001 look very similar to WIU's from 2004-2007.
Once again this is just an argument on SIU being in the Top 10 for the past 10 years, not against any of the others ranked.

Furman hasn't had a losing season since, I think, 1994. If you take the past 10 years, the Paladins have made the playoffs in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, and 2006. They made the finals in 2001.
So, that's seven playoff appearances in ten years. Of the original list, I believe only Montana has more appearances and Furman is tied with App and Georgia Southern (double check my math). We don't have the national titles though.
I also think McNeese is a glaring oversight.

I agree, this type of consistency should make up the Top 10 teams of the past 10 years. Northern Iowa is the only MVFC team that should be on this list. The MVFC has had some great teams, but only UNI has remained consistently PLAYOFF good. SIU is on track to put together a great decade though.

Actually I think all the Gateway, or MVC teams in that poll are over-rated.
grizbeer
November 7th, 2008, 01:38 PM
How about this system:
Championship Game win = 100 points
Semi-Final Win = 70 points
Quarter final win = 50 points
1st Round win = 40 points
Play Off Appearance = 20 points
Winning Season = 10 points
Win = 1 point
Loss = -1 point
So a 15 - 1 National Championship season = 304 points (100+70+50+40+20+10+15-1)
Using this system from 1998 - 2007 I calculate:
App State = 1275 points
GA Southern = 1154 points
Montana = 1071
UMASS = 735
Delaware = 720
Furman = 565
UNI = 549
McNeese = 434
YSU = 425
JMU = 415
I didn't do anyone else.

The Mountaineer/OL FU schedule is explained here
http://www.anygivensaturday.com/forum/showthread.php?t=35031
Please remember this schedule was always titled "Best in the Playoffs" since we know that some FCS teams don't participate in the playoffs we tried to keep the name politically correct.
I think the biggest discussion point when this was first presented was should teams get credit for participating in the playoffs even if they don't win. An example would be Jackson St. I can't remember how many times they made the playoffs but I do know they never won a game. The numbers in the schedule give a team 5 points (I think) each time they make the playoffs. Personally, I think that is fair because getting to the playoffs can be a challenge in itself but there are good arguments for not awarding points simply for making the playoffs.

Maybe instead of a top ten - a top 16 current FCS (last ten years)?
I do like our progress as a program the last 10 years (after over a 100 years of Div I football). With our last win, we were assured a non-losing season for the 4th year in a row. Something that has only happened twice 1913-1922 & 1932-1940. In the past, we just showed up with a good team once every 5 or 6 years (sort of an FCS Cicada). Enough promo...back to the regularly scheduled discussion...

The problem with that is you reward teams by winning their conference, and we all know all conferences are not created equal, and we're trying to find a consistent measuring stick.
I'm sure someone smarter than me can figure this out. There has to be a ratio of playoff wins to playoff appearances. If your number is above 1.0, you're performing well.
Maybe it's as simple as number of championships x my proposed playoff ratio...I dunno. Using that, I'm sure we'd see App St. in the stratosphere above everyone else.

True, but originally the system was to rank all playoff teams, so they needed some score.
What they use is for each year you make the playoffs 0 wins= 5, 1 win = 15, 2 wins = 30, 3 wins = 50, 4 wins =75.
So a win in 1 appearance is = to 3 appearances without a win. 2 wins in a single year > 5 appearances without a win.
Not perfect, but it might be acceptable. xchinscratchx

It is actually a mixed bag. Sometimes you are rewarding mediocre teams for simply winning their conference but sometimes you are rewarding teams that have great seasons but got a lousy draw. Pretty subjective measurement and we tried to eliminate as much subjectivity as possiblexnodx

Thank youxnodx That, with my comment above, makes giving points for appearances better. However, I do believe it is a work in progress. The big issue will be how to do we adjust for the expanding playoffs. Maybe the first rounds or playin rounds will be 2.5 points xeyebrowx

That's what I liked about it: xlolx

also wofford should be looked at but they are probably more in the neighborhood of top 15 IMO

Like I said...I think there are probably better (more "educated") picks than mine. I was pretty confident on the first three, but after that it was kind of a guess-work for me. I didn't have all of the stats in front of me, it was just from my own following of FCS throughout those years. I'm glad you all responded...it's good to see other opionions, IMHO. Thanks to all!

How about this system:
Championship Game win = 100 points
Semi-Final Win = 70 points
Quarter final win = 50 points
1st Round win = 40 points
Play Off Appearance = 20 points
Winning Season = 10 points
Win = 1 point
Loss = -1 point
So a 15 - 1 National Championship season = 304 points (100+70+50+40+20+10+15-1)
Using this system from 1998 - 2007 I calculate:
App State = 1275 points
GA Southern = 1154 points
Montana = 1071
UMASS = 735
Delaware = 720
Furman = 565
UNI = 549
McNeese = 434
YSU = 425
JMU = 415
I didn't do anyone else.
And here it is!!! Great Post grizbeer! I knew someone would come up with a good idea like this...I just didn't have the time. I guess I didn't do too bad considering I wasn't looking at any stats. So, sorry to the teams I forgot in the original. Not too bad for a rookie though.

Not sure where you went wrong, but Delaware should be 740 using this system, not 720.

I was wondering how we ended up just behind UMass. I knew it would be close, but I thought the Hens would have a slight edge.

IMO, the difference between a 5-6 season (-1) and a 6-5 season (11) is too great using this system.

What about a 6-6 season? xeyebrowx

As has already been discussed SIU should be no where near this list. For a reference:
1998 - 3-8 Last in Gateway
1999 - 5-6 Last in Gateway
2000 - 3-8 Second to last
2001 - 1-10 Last in Gateway
2002 - 4-8 Second to last

I agree with this Griz fanxthumbsupx
It would even be more so, if you were considering the last 15 or maybe 20 years.
The run in the 90's was pretty good.
In the 2000's, we had the bad 2004 season and the seasons screwed up by hurricanes.
