View Full Version : Worst D-I Football State

Wasn't sure whether to put this in smack or other sports because I'm including I-A and I-AA. Obviously decided to put this here.

Which state is having the worst year in D-I football? Keep in mind that a couple of these states do have one or two teams that are doing OK (Tenn has TSU and UT-M, Idaho has Boise....) but either the flagship schools or many schools that are doing poorly this year. So I guess the question may be better asked "which state is suffering the most football misery?"

Sorry if I missed anyone. xpeacex

Should we base it on past success too?? My initial thought was Wyoming, but then it's not like they've got a lot of success to go on...

Edited to bold year in my post. Didn't include WYO since they only have one school. All of my choices have multiple D-I's all playing badly this year.

one thing that isnt included is schools doing well in those states... i.e. idaho that has boise that is undefeated...

i voted for washington... cant get worse than uw and wsu; ewu on the other hand is under performing on an historic level

Not picking on you fan, but I kinda wish the system made pepole read the first post before seeing the poll. You certainly won't be alone in making that comment. In addition to the two I mentioned, Colgate is having a good year in NY. xpeacex

Got it. I went with Washington. Washington St. is EXTREMELY horrible, Washington is VERY horrible and EWU is a disappointment.

Yeah, Washington is hard to top, but I went with the state with the most sub .500 teams.

Is that really "suffering" though? NY is used to that since Donovan McNabb graduated.

That's true. You can't take a leak in NY without pissing on a loser...

Wait, that's not just in football season...:D

Let me pose it to you another way....

How bad is it when it's possible that the best college team in New York is Buffalo? xeekx

Had to go with Washington. The two Pac-10 teams are terrible, and EWU was supposed to be much better than they have been.

Delaware is worth noting as well, considering how far both teams have dropped off from last season.

It not possible....its TRUE.

According to Massey NY would go:

Buffalo
Syracuse
Army
Colgate
Albany
Hofstra
Stony Brook
Cornell
Fordham
Columbia

Gotta go with Washington. Sweet Jesus, is Wazzu bad this year. I thought Syracuse under Greg Robinson was the poster child for bad teams, but I've no doubt that 'Cuse would destroy the Cougars. The Apple Cup will have to be renamed the "Apple State Pillow Fight."

For the record, The District of Columbia ain't a state and Idaho is offset by a very good Boise St. team which should have excluded them from the list.

O for 2 in losing teams + 3 Electoral Votes last night = 1 state in my poll. :p

Administrative District
Governmental region
Municipality

All of those apply. But if you don't have 2 Senators, at least 1 member in the House of Representatives and a star on the flag, you're not a state. They have a tad more clout than Puerto Rico, I'll give you that! xsmiley_wix

Who would have thought Ball State is the best team in Indiana?

Ball State 8-0
Indiana 3-6
Indiana State 0-9
Purdue 3-6
Notre Dame 5-3

And if PR Tech weren't having such a good year, they'd be on the list too.

I went with Tennessee. Most of the other bad states had no or low expectations. When UT fires its coach after the game to celebrate his tenth anniversary of bringing home a NC, you have your winner in suffering.

I am not sure I agree with the way this is set-up. Though NY is doing poor with those schools, we also have Buffalo who could win the MAC, Colgate who can win the Patriot, and barring a collapse, Albany winning the NEC.

All three schools very well couldgo make a Bowl/Playoff game.

I voted for D.C. When Georgetown is your flagship football school, you've got problems.

Voted for DC but NJ certainly has its problems this year. Rutgers might run the table and get to 7-5, but I'm not betting the house on it.

With the success that Boise has had recently, as well as being readily accessible to the hottest recruiting area in the state, I'd have to say that Boise State is the "flagship" school in Idaho.

I think the worst D-1 football states are Vermont and Alaska. They don't have any D-1 football.

I voted Tennessee for worst. Like another poster said, NY, DC and Washington are used to sucking.

Best D-I state this year would probably either be Utah (BYU, Utah and Weber), Oklahoma (OU, OSU and Tulsa), Pennsylvania (Penn St., Pitt and Lafayette) or Georgia (GT, Georgia Southern and Savannah St.)

I'm not serious about one of the above. Guess which one.

Colorado should be on that list, both CU and CSU are shadows of their former selves.
