From walk-on to Bearkat captain, SHSU's Griffin having a big time playing defense By Cody Stark/Assistant Sports Editor
No major colleges beat down John Griffin's door, offering him a football scholarship after his senior year at Klein Oak High School in 2001. Griffin toyed with the idea of trying out at other NCAA Division I-AA schools, but once he visited them, he decided none was a good fit.
Then Griffin traveled up Interstate 45 to Huntsville, and asked then head coach Ron Randleman if he could try out for the Sam Houston State squad. Randleman gave Griffin a shot, and the tight end made the Bearkat team.

Coach's Corner: Pate to start at quarterback for Kats today
By Cody Stark/Assistant Sports Editor
A question-and-answer session with Sam Houston State head coach Todd Whitten on this week's game at Northern Colorado.
HI: Who will get the nod at quarterback today, Wade Pate or Phillip Daugherty?
TW: We are just going to proceed with Wade. He played really well last week, and hopefully he can keep that going. There is certainly a possibility that either at some point this week or next week we will let Phillip try it again. It will just be a decision we make throughout the game.
