I'm actually a Bruins fan (yes I know that's odd considering where I'm from). I wish I got OLN because I miss watching hockey. I guess I'll have to wait for the spring, when NBC will televise some. Damn ESPN for not having faith in hockey to come back strong. The new rules are working well, though, considering Ottawa is averaging 4.8 goals a game.

I have to root for somebody all those years the Isles don't make the post season. One of my favorite sports memories is game 7 against the Capitals, night before Easter, in '87(?). They have a club hockey team with aspirations of someday having a DI team. A new arena was voted down by the city a few years back. If that had been approved, the next step would have been a varsity team. Since that failed, NDSU took the DI, I-AA direction with football. We hear about UND all the time, it's a good deal for them.

I watched most of that game, and definitely all five overtimes. Those kind of games are what make the NHL so incredible in my opinion. The tension and nervousness on every shot, knowing the next goal could potentially propel your team to the next round. I love hockey overtime.
Does anyone know if they'll have shootouts in the playoffs? I hope not. It works alright in the regular season, but I think that would ruin the playoffs.

True. The Hawks now have the longest drought in the NHL? What's really depressing is that the Lightning, Devils, Pens, Avs, Stars.... all have more recent Cups. I don't mind the Canadians or Red Wings winning so much, but all these newer teams. :(
They Flyers have lost five finals since last winning. Lost to Montreal, Islanders, Edmonton, Edmonton, Wings. Hockey is really amazing in that how few teams won the Cup in the 70's and 80's. Yes, many teams were still new, but in that 20 period you only had....
Flames - 1 (1989)
Boston - 2
Philly - 2
Isles - 4
Oilers - 4

I had always followed the Islanders starting with their expansion year mainly because they were local and I did not like the Rangers. I really became a big fan in '75 when the came back from 3-0 down to beat then Penguins and nearly did it again to the Flyers coming back from 3-0 down only to lose game 7. The Flyers even had to call out Kate Smith for that 7th game. That was, I believe the 2nd Cup year for the Flyers.
I also remember Clark Gillies just beating the piss out of Dave Schultz during that series.

Then you should also be familiar with the offsides non-call in 1980 (on the list of the worst calls/non-calls in pro sports history). :bawling: I actually watched that game with an Islanders fan. The elite of the league reside in Detroit and Ottawa. That's my Finals prediction. Montreal and Philadelphia might give Ottawa a run for their money in the East, but no team in the West will beat the Red Wings. Seriously, who's going to take them down come playoff time? Los Angeles, Vancouver, Nashville? I don't think so. The best all-around player in the league has to be Dany Heatley. I hated to see the Thrashers trade him, but he would have been gone when his contract was up anyway. And we got good compensation in the form of Marion Hossa. That had to have been extremely embarrasing for the Canes at home the other night when they not only got torched for 9 goals, but got shut out by the Thrashers 4th-string netminder. :o The only thing more embarassing that I've witnessed this year is when the Thrashers had a 4-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of a game on the road against the lowly Penguins, and ended up getting clobbered by Pittsburgh.

I think that once the initial forward motion of the puck is stopped the play is dead. This rule was implemented in order to keep skaters from making plays on rebounds. The Carolina goalie had probably stopped the forward motion of the puck, hence the comments from the commentators.

But that's not what happened here. You are correct that no rebound shots are allowed, but if the puck goes in the net once it leaves the shooters stick, it doesn't matter how it crosses the line as long as it doesn't touch the shooter again. The whole part of the rule of forward motion is for the skater. Did you happen to catch the SO goal that the Rangers scored that made Top 10 plays last week? The player put the puck and stick between his legs in kind of a drop pass to himself. Clearly, the puck was moving backward before he shot it.

As far as I know, it's not over until the ref gives the safe sign. But as the shootout is new and I don't ever recall this being an issue with a penalty shot, I certainly could be incorrect.

Here is Rule 30, section a with my emphasis on the pertinent info...
Any infraction of the rules which calls for a "PENALTY SHOT" shall be taken as follows:
The Referee shall ask to have announced over the public address system the name of the player designated by him or selected by the Team entitled to take the shot (as appropriate). He shall then place the puck on the center face-off spot and the player taking the shot will, on the instruction of the Referee, play the puck from there and shall attempt to score on the goalkeeper. The puck must be kept in motion towards the opponent's goal line and once it is shot, the play shall be considered complete. No goal can be scored on a rebound of any kind (an exception being the puck off the goal post, then the goalkeeper and then directly into the goal), and any time the puck crosses the goal line, the shot shall be considered complete.
Again, to me this means the puck kept in motion prior to the shooter actually shooting and once it is shot, there is no stipulation that the play is dead if the puck stops, only that there can be no rebound shot.
